KERRY basketballers are ready to shine on the international stage this summer.

Tralee Imperials players, Tim and Sean Pollman-Daamen from Ballymac, were selected for the Irish Under 18 team to play in Levice, Slovakia in August.

Also, Castleisland’s Paris McCarthy, of  the St Mary’s club, has the privilege of heading to the Czech Republic to represent Ireland at the Under 18 women’s basketball team in the FIBA European challenge.

John Dowling, Tralee Imperials Chairman, speaking at the sponsorship of their U18/20 National Cup jersey by Lee Strand, said; “We are very proud as a club of Sean and Tim’s achievement in making the Irish under 18 team. This is the lads second Irish team having competed two years ago with the Irish under 16 team in Montenegro. The lads will play this year in Slovakia in August. We wish them and the team well, we will be watching online and are looking forward to seeing them back home playing with Tralee Imperials under 20 national cup team next season.”

Paris McCarthy has played all her club basketball with St Marys Castleisland and last season broke through to their senior panel. Indeed, there is a Kerry theme running throughout the team.

Her club coach Liam Culloty is also the assistant coach for the Irish Under 18 team. The team is coached by Tommy O Mahony who hails from Cordal and now resides in Waterford and the team manager is Aoife Nolan also from Castleisland.

Paris said; “We are all so looking forward to travelling and competing against top class opposition. We haven’t had proper games and competition in over a year so to go up against the best teams in Europe will be a great experience”.

All of the games at the FIBA European challenge will be streamed on Youtube with the links being posted on Basketball Irelands social media.
