FORMER Kerry captains, Radio Kerry presenters, an RTE journalist and many more will read their favourite poems and enjoy some friendly chat at a special evening in aid of a charity this Thursday night.
Radio Kerry presenter Deirdre Walsh is hosting a poetry evening with a difference in Listowel to raise money for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. Deirdre has asked 12 well-known Kerry people to join her at St John’s Arts Centre in Listowel at 8pm, to read a poem of their choice.
Among those who’ve agreed to take part, are former Republic of Ireland soccer manager Eoin Hand, RTE’s Southern Editor Paschal Sheehy, All-Ireland winning Kerry captains, Dara O Cinneide and Liam Hassett and Kerry Rose, Sally Ann Leahy.

‘Poems By the Pulpit’ isn’t your typical literary event or even your typical poetry reading – most of those taking part admit that this is completely out of their comfort zone.
“I’ve asked them all the choose a poem they like, be it something from the Leaving Cert many moons ago, or something that has particular significance or meaning for them. It could be funny or serious. As fundraisers go, it’s a bit different but I’m hoping it’ll be a fun night.”
Others taking part include Gabriel Fitzmaurice, Radio Kerry’s Elaine Kinsella and Jerry O’Sullivan, novelist Breda Joy, Joanna Keane and Vicar Joe Murphy.
Since last year, Deirdre – who presents the station’s ‘TalkAbout’ programme – has been an Ambassador for the Kerry Hospice.
Having seen the wonderful work done at the Palliative Care centre at University Hospital Kerry, she decided to organise an event to help them in some small way.
She approached Mari O’Connell, Director of Nursing at the centre, and asked if there was anything they specifically needed at the new inpatient unit.
“She told me they’d love to upgrade the main bathroom, to make it more like a luxury bathroom you’d see in a spa or a nice hotel. They’re working with an interior designer, with the aim of putting in some nice lighting, perhaps surround-sound music and a few other touches. So that’s where the proceeds of the event will go.”
She thanked Kerry Hospice PRO Andrea O’Donoghue and Maire Logue from St John’s, Listowel for their help in planning the event. Tickets are €20, including wine/tea/coffee and nibbles – and are available now by phoning St John’s at (068) 22566.
