THE Kerry for Choice group has issued a statement calling on the government to set a date for a referendum on the Eighth Amendment.
“The recommendations from the Citizens’ Assembly once again show that there is a need for choice and change. The government must now respect the will of the Citizens’ Assembly,” reads the statement.
Paula Dennan, Convener of Kerry for Choice, said: “Abortion is a healthcare issue and not a constitutional one. The members of the Citizens’ Assembly made strong recommendations as to the type of access to abortion they expect to see introduced.”
“87% of the Citizens’ Assembly believe that the Eighth Amendment cannot remain in its current form. It is vital that the upcoming Oireachtas committee respect the will of the Citizens’ Assembly,” Ms Dennan continued.
“Since its insertion into the Constitution, hundreds of thousands of women have left Ireland to access abortion services abroad. One woman a week makes that journey from Kerry. It is time for the government to set a date for a referendum on the Eighth Amendment and to legislate for free, safe and accessible abortion for those who need it.”
The organisation is holding an open meeting at the Abbey Inn tonight (Tuesday) at 8pm. All are invited.
