KERRY ETB Training Centre in Monvalley have launched a new evening course for people who want to learn how to best record, edit, shape and archive local stories.

Led by RTE Radio 1’s Gráinne McPolin, this new practical skills evening course explores what makes a good story, how to approach the interview and recording of story subjects and how to best present your story using digital editing techniques.

All participants will gain experience recording and editing audio stories – to a professional standard suitable for radio, podcast or online.

Ideal for those who have people and stories they wish to record or those who are involved in community projects – or those who wish to explore the worlds of radio journalism or podcasting.

Gráinne McPolin is a features producer for Drivetime on RTE Radio 1 and a documentary producer for Newstalk 106-108FM.

Learning Outcomes

• Identify how storytelling differs from journalism.
• Select suitable equipment for recording and editing radio items.
• Identify production processes for story features and audio documentaries.
• Identify the criteria used for evaluating the quality and value of audio items.

Topics covered

• Storytelling versus Journalism, Fact and Fiction, News Values. Various radio items: location interviews, vox pops, features.
• Equipment Recording: Digital Recorders, Microphones, Cabling, Shields, Power Sources. Editing: Digital editing systems, computer software, ancillaries.
• Factors in Choosing Equipment: location, studio, industrial and domestic settings, health and safety/risk assessment.
• Production processes: Research, idea generation, production, compilation, recording, editing, writing.
• Style and format: house style, target audience, context, time limits, selection, interest value, topicality, news values, editorial control

How to apply
