GARDAI in Kerry have carried out Test Purchasing of alcohol operations which have led to 16 detections since January 2017.

Test Purchasing is where an underage person, selected by gardaí, enters a bar, supermarket or off-licence and attempts to buy alcohol, while a plain clothes member of An Garda Síochána is watching nearby.

They have carried out 45 such operations in Kerry in the past 15 months and in 16 cases the underage person was successful in purchasing alcohol.

“That’s a frightening statistic,” said Kerry Garda Chief Superintendent, Tom Myers, who gave the figures at the Joint Policing Committee meeting in Kerry County Council Buildings in Tralee on Friday morning.

He said it will be interesting to see how the judiciary deal with these upcoming cases, as it could result in a closure order of up to four days which could have serious ramifications for businesses.

Chief Supt Myers said that gardaí have a very good relationship with the vintners association in Kerry, but it was a sad reflection on some of their members that underage people were not challenged enough in such cases.
