THERE was a good turnout at Tralee Library on Tuesday evening for the launch of The Kerry Magazine, 2017.

The Kerry Magazine, Issue No. 27, 2017, which is published annually by the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society (KAHS) was launched by Ms Moira Murrell, Kerry County Council, CEO.

This was the first in a series of events designed to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the foundation of the Society, on May 3, 1967. It is particularly appropriate that Ms Murrell would launch the Golden Jubilee edition of The Kerry Magazine, as Kerry County Council has been a staunch supporter of the society down through the years.

The Society owes its origins in no small way to the effort and foresight of the then Kerry County Librarian, Tom Armitage, who on April 25, 1967, called a public meeting to form a Kerry historical society.

On May 3, a public meeting was held in the County Council Chamber, Ashe Memorial Hall, Tralee at which the Society was formed, a constitution adopted and president and officers elected.

His successor as County Librarian, Ms Kathleen Browne continued the task of nurturing and fostering the KAHS as does the current County Librarian Mr Tommy O’Connor.

This year’s magazine contains 24 articles ranging in topics from their Schools’ Outreach Programme – which this year focuses on the year-long 1916 commemoration events undertaken at Knockaderry National School, Farranfore – to an article by Donal O’Sullivan entitled ‘ The Royal Irish Constabulary Mutiny at Castleisland’.

It’s a must for anyone with an interest in local history and copies of the magazine (at €10) may be purchased at Easons, Garveys (Tralee and Dingle), Supervalue, Centra, O’Mahony’s, Polymath, First Chaptter (Tralee) and most local bookshops.
