THE current Kerry Rose will have a very busy but rewarding day ahead of her on Saturday, when she takes on a challenge for charity before handing over her sash later that night at the Kerry Rose Selection.

Breda O’Mahony from Rathmore will be taking on Ireland’s highest mountain and climbing Carrauntoohil. From there she will cycle to the Ballyroe Heights Hotel for the selection. It’s all in aid of a charity close to her heart, the Irish Cancer Society.

“Saturday May 26th is a special night for me. It marks a year since I was selected with the tremendous honour and privilege to represent Kerry at the 2017 Rose of Tralee International festival,” explained Breda on her fundaising page.

“On stage with Daithi I spoke about my Mom who passed away in July 2010 after eight courageous years fighting numerous Cancers (Breast, Ovarian, Melanoma brain & lymph tumours). Every time I hear of someone being diagnosed or passing away from Cancer, I feel every ounce of emotion that their family experience.

“That big C word leaves permanent marks on people’s lives, which unfortunately so many people can relate to. I went through a phase of wanting to be an Oncologist after being inspired by mom, however due to an unrelenting and sometimes comical phobia to blood and needles, I had to hang up my doctor’s coat prematurely. I haven’t become a doctor and I’m not quite Einstein so I’m useless to finding that cure to cancer, but I can help fundraise for other Einstein’s in the form of researchers to find that cure. I couldn’t think of a more significant time than May 26th to do this.

“I would be so appreciative any donations. All money fund raised is going directly to the research component of the Irish Cancer Society.”

Donations can be made on her JustGiving page titled – Breda’s Climb and Cycle for Cancer Research. You can access the page by clicking here
