Senior Division 1 County League

Austin Stacks 1-11

Kerins O Rahillys 0-14

Our senior side made the short trip to Connolly Park to face local rivals Austin Stacks on Saturday evening last.

We took a quick lead with a pointed free from Gearoid Savage, Stacks then kicked the next two to go ahead.

In the eight minute we had a golden opportunity of a goal when Padraig Neenan bared down on goals and took a shot which was saved, when a simple pass to free man to his left would have been a certain goal, to compound matters the home side picked up the loose ball and quickly moved down field and scored a point, a huge swing on proceedings.

Gearoid Savage kicked another close in free after a foul on Gavin O Brien, this left us trailing by one .

Stacks got on a bit of a roll then and struck for four unanswered points, with a few coming from our own unforced errors and poor decision making by us.
We had to wait until the twentieth minute for our next score , when Gavin O Brien was pulled back when racing through the middle, the free converted converted by Diarmuid O Sullivan. Both sides then traded scores , the O’Rahillys scores coming from two Gearoid Savage frees. This left us trailing 8-5 at the break , and it was most notable that all our scores came from dead balls.

We were dealt another blow at half time when we lost the influential Gavin O Brien through injury, however the team made a good start to the second half with Cormac Coffey making one of his customary runs from the back and kicking a great score . Stacks would respond shortly after with one of their own.

Following this we began to completely dominated possession, as we pushed up on the opposition kick out we were camped in the Rock half for long periods, Con Barrett and Sean Walsh were particularly dominant, and this dominance was rewarded when we went from three down to go ahead by four.

Our scores coming from Barry John Keane with two, one free, Cormac Coffey , Shane McElligott one each , and two from Ben Hanafan and Diarmuid O Sullivan , one a well struck 45.

This left the score 10-13 in our favour with ten minutes remaining. Barry John Keane stretched our lead with a well taken mark. The home side then replied with their final point of the game.

It was during this final period that the blues really should have put the game to bed, with numerous opportunities squandered, one an open goal following a poor kick out from the opposition goal keeper, who kicked straight to Gearoid Savage, but he rushed his shot , blazing it wide of the open target. We were again guilty of some poor turn overs with the game at our mercy.

In the final play of the game the home side capitalised , when we again lost a ball we shouldn’t have, they broke quickly and finished to the back of the net with literally the final kick of the game.

With the game ending level and both teams getting a point each , it felt more like a loss to the blues in attendance. Our old failing of poor decision making and poor turnovers is what ultimately cost us the win.

Kitty , Ella and Isabella did a great job holding midfield while Kayla, Lauren, Jessica and Ella kept the Na Gaeil goalkeeper on her toes.  Emily, Roisin, Alice and Georgia did great work getting the ball into our forwards.

Not forgetting our amazing backs Sophia, Alison and Orla and out super goal keeper Caoimhe who made some great saves. All the girls worked hard chasing down the ball carrier and putting them under pressure.

Well done to everyone and keep up the practise at home. Despite having an injury that prevented her from playing Eva came to support her team mates and helped out on the sideline. We hope your back playing soon Eva.

Another great session put in by all with their usual skills drills followed by obstacle course with and without the ball.  The coaches are amazed at the skills development in these few weeks, especially soloing, pick ups and high catching. The girls are making great progress since the start of the season and this was visible on the pitch as they put some lovely moves together that resulted in some fine scores across the four quarters that the game was broken up into.

An especially pleasing aspect of the game was the effort they put into their tackling. Each player was given an opportunity to play in the backs, midfield and forwards during the game and all played a fantastic game. Well done girls keep up the great work.
