Kieran Donaghy’s Story Opens New Season Of TG4’s ‘Laochra Gael’ Next Week

THE acclaimed GAA sports series ‘Laochra Gael’ returns to TG4 in March for an 18th series and the story of Kerry’s Kieran Donaghy will be the first screened next Thursday, March 5 at 9.30pm.

The series hour-long format has proved a huge success, bringing each player’s personal stories to screen and will feature six Laochra with genuine star quality, revealing deeper, fresh and sometimes unexpected insights into the lives of these icons.

‘Kieran Donaghy – On The Edge’, will tell the story of the Tralee man breaking through with the ‘Underdogs’, the experiment that made a full forward out of him, the basketball hands, the decline and the revival, and of course, Joe Brolly.

In his career, Kieran won four All Ireland medals, three All Stars and Footballer of the Year. And in the background, the complex and difficult relationship with his father that was tied up in everything he did on the field of play.

Kieran’s story is told through the eyes of his mother Deirdre Donaghy, former Kerry team mate Paul Galvin, former Kerry football and basketball team mate Micheál Quirke, former manager Éamonn Fitzmaurice, arch rival and former Tyrone defender Joe McMahon, Irish Independent Journalist Vincent Hogan and Irish Examiner Journalist Michael Moynihan. It’s an episode not to be missed.

Along with Kieran Donaghy – this new season’s batch of GAA legends also includes Diarmuid Lyng of Wexford, Dublin’s Alan Brogan, Galway’s Iggy Clarke, David Brady of Mayo and Monaghan’s Brenda McAnespie.

The new Laochra Gael season will air on TG4 at 9:30pm on Thursdays from March the 5th, with a repeat on Friday nights.
