FORTY women, mainly from Tralee and west Kerry, pulled together to raise funds for Kerry Hospice by running the VHI Women’s Mini-Marathon during the June Bank Holiday weekend.

Spearheaded by Blennerville woman, Andrea O’Donoghue, she put up a post on Facebook and many women responded.

“We started a group called ‘Mothers and Others’ and it spiralled from there,” said Andrea at the presentation of a cheque for  €4,100 to the Hospice on Thursday evening. The funds will go towards the new Palliative Care Unit being built at the moment.

“We put it on Facebook and we ended up having around 40 women from Dingle, Annascaul, Tralee and Blennerville signed up for it. Everyone did sponsorship cards and brought in a couple of hundred euro each. A few girls have had people going through the Palliative Care Unit and cancer affects everyone,” said Andrea, who lost her own dad, Tony, to cancer in 2014.

Many of the ladies were dressed in their marathon shirts to present the cheque to a very grateful Ted Moynihan and Mairead Fernane of the Kerry Hospice at the Palliative Care Unit.
