Lee Strand Cup To Be Dedicated To Memory Of Stacks Stalwart

THE annual Austin Stacks Lee Strand Invitational tournament takes place this weekend and this year the cup will be dedicated to the memory of a great Stacks man.

Denis ‘Dinny’ O’Connor’s died in March of this year and to remember him, a new base has been fitted to the cup with his name engraved on it.

A portrait of Dinny will be unveiled in the clubhouse at 9pm on Saturday night. The O’Connor family, neighbours from Connolly Park and club members are being invited to attend.

Also, to mark the club’s Centenary Year, special medals have been commissioned for this year’s tournament.

For many years Dinny was involved in many activities within the club and was involved in the establishment of the U13 Lee Strand Tournament back in 1986, which has grown from strength to strength down the years under his stewardship.

The tournament itself features 16 teams including Stacks, Kerins O’Rahillys, Churchill and John Mitchels from the town area. The group phase games begin on Saturday morning at 11am.

Teams:

Group A – Kerins O’Rahillys, Mungret St Pauls, Nemo Rangers, Clontarf.

Group B – Austin Stacks, Churchill, Oranmore Maree, Naas,

Group C – John Mitchels, An Ghaeltacht, Na Piarsaigh, Ennistymon

Group D – Na Gaeil, Killarney/Legion, Salthill/Knocknacarra, Ballyboden St. Endas.

Group Phase begin at 11am all games 15 minutes per half.

Cup, Shield & Plate  Semi Finals 4.20pm  & 5pm Sat

All Finals on Senior pitch on Sunday Sept 10th (25 mins a half)

10.30am:  Abie Allen Plate Finals

11.45am:   Billy Breen Shield Final

1pm:   Dinny O’Connor Lee Strand Cup Final.

The running order of finals may be changed to facilitate travel arrangements of finalists.
