LIBRARIES all around the country will be hosting a Libraries Open Day on this Saturday, February 29 and a special invitation is extended to all, both current and non-members to come along and see the services on offer for them at their local library.

All of the nine libraries in Kerry – Ballybunion, Caherciveen, Castleisland, Dingle/Daingean Uí Chúis, Kenmare, Killarney, Killorglin, Listowel and Tralee – are open from 10.00am – 5.00pm every Saturday.

Each provides a wide range of services, including adult and children’s book lending, e-books and audio books, online language and training courses, classroom novels for schools and a local history and archives service.

All are provided free of charge while fines are no longer charged on overdue books – just read them and get them back as soon as possible!

In addition, Kerry has a two vehicle Mobile Library service which stops at over 90 locations county wide while there is a dedicated local history and archives service operating from Library Headquarters in Tralee.

On the Open Day, library staff will be on hand, giving guided tours in each local library at 11.00a.m. and 3.00p.m., showing visitors around, demonstrating online services and signing up new members.

Other activities on the day will include storytime for young children; Killorglin Library will have a talk on ‘Literature and Fine Art’ and Killarney Library will host a ‘Get Autism Active’ workshop. Full details on the library websitewww.kerrylibrary.ie

This is all part of a current national campaign to promote the use of libraries. County Librarian, Tommy O’Connor, is enthusiastic about the role of libraries but is of the view that more people should avail of the library services and facilities provided by Kerry County Council.

He expressed thanks those who use libraries regularly and said that ’libraries would very much welcome those who do not use libraries at all or who have not visited for a while and asked as many as possible throughout Kerry to use the Leap Day on Saturday to take a closer look at what libraries provide.’ So, come along to your local library this Saturday. You will enjoy the discovery!
