A FORMER builder is flying high in the footwear industry as he has just signed a deal with the GAA this week.

Tralee-based sports company RClub Sports, owned and run by Anthony Moriarty,  this week launched a commercial partnership with The Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) to produce a special pink boot to sell to girls around the country.

The boot was launched in Croke Park this Monday by Pat Quill, President of the LGFA, Anthony Moriarty of RClub Sports along with senior football stars from Dublin, Cork and Galway.

Traleetoday.ie spoke to Anthony Moriarty of RClub Sports about the new deal and the business.

“We just spotted a niche in the market, where we could cater to clubs by sourcing the boots from overseas and stitching on the club crests locally. It’s a simple idea that just took off,” said Anthony.

The boot RClub Sports are producing specially for the LGFA is pink and features the association’s logo on the tongue. The boot will be marketed across the country and further afield.

“The LGFA have been fantastic to deal with. They saw an opportunity to raise funds which is the biggest thing, every county board in Ireland is crying out for funds,” said Anthony.

RClub Sports are based in the Tom Crean Centre in Kerry Technology Park. They employ four people and have been in business for three years.

“The phone has been hopping the last few days there has been a massive interest in the boot,”  Anthony said.

Anthony began work in the construction industry when he was 15 and continued on that path until seven years ago when he was left go because of the downturn in the economy.

He is a resident of Connolly Park and member of Austin Stacks GAA club.  It was while out watching his son Dara at training for Stacks he came up with the idea that started the business.

“I saw that the top, shorts and socks were all crested and I got a brain-wave to crest the boots as well and that was it, it just started from there,” Anthony said.

“I had no business experience at all, but just decided to have a cut off it and three years later we’re here with this massive contract, it’s great,” he said.
