SINN Féin Councillor Deirdre Ferris is calling on the Dept of Education act immediately to resolve the ongoing problems with school transport.

In recent weeks the councillor for the Tralee Municipal District of the Council has been contacted by numerous families looking for assistance as they cannot get a placement for their child on school transport or have been issued with inappropriate collection times and collection points.

“Some families have been issued with collection times as early as 7:20am which will have their secondary and primary school children being dropped at their school nearly an hour before the school day starts,” said Cllr Ferris.

Cllr Ferris said she also has had complaints from concerned parents regarding unsafe collection points.

“Primary and secondary school students have been issued with collection points on the side of main roads, with no street lighting or set down areas to wait for their bus collection.  This is a serious health and safety concern for many parents”.

According to Cllr Ferris, the registration process for a school bus placement has also been causing problems for families. Some claiming to have registered one or more children on the same day, but not all students registered on the system.

This has left some siblings without a bus placement. Cllr Ferris is calling on the Minister and the Department for Education to resolve these issues immediately.
