OVER €325,000 has been announced for eight Kerry sports projects by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD, this morning.

The Kerry Fine Gael TD announced substantial funding for the projects under his Department’s Sports Capital Programme and a Tralee club is set to benefit. St. Brendan’s Park FC will receive €45,200 towards club development works.

Minister Griffin announced the funding as part of his efforts to facilitate applicants to the Sports Capital Programme who were previously deemed to be invalid for various reasons.

This is the first time ever in the history of the programme that invalid applicants have been given such a second chance and Minister Griffin says that it is the least that the applicants deserve considering the contribution that they make to sport in Kerry and throughout the country.

As part of the money coming to Kerry, Camp Community Council will receive €55,000 to improve the playing pitch at Camp Community Centre.

Kenmare Community School will receive €36,000 towards a compact athletics training facility.

Listowel Community Centre is being allocated €22,800 to further equip their new state of the art gym, which has also benefitted from additional Government funding through the LEADER programme.

In Dingle, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibne will receive €10,700 towards a specialist training area.

In Killarney, the South and East Kerry Community Rural Track project at St. Brendan’s College is to receive €59,000, which will enable the completion of the track project in conjunction with further Government funding under the LEADER programme.

In Faha/Listry, a new all weather pitch at Faha National School will receive €42,800.

St. Michael’s College in Listowel will also benefit to the tune of €53,700 towards the development of a new artificial playing surface on the school grounds.

In total, the Kerry recipients of this announcement will receive over €325,000.

Minister Griffin said:  “I am really happy for the recipients of this funding and I worked hard to ensure that these applicants for funding would be facilitated through a new “second chance” system. I am delighted that the new system has been such a success and I know that the funding that I am announcing today is hugely important to all of the communities of Kerry that will benefit from these enhanced facilities.

“I wish all of our funding recipients well and look forward to seeing these projects coming to fruition in the time ahead.”
