WHERE does Der O’Sullivan’s end and The Mall begin? Ah sure they’re all the one anyway.

The deli/cafe/bar is a town institution and I’ve been eating their delicious food at home for as long as I can remember.

It’s real comfort food from the deli counter; mutton pies, quiches, vol au vents, prawn salads, pies stuffed cooked chickens and the best homemade deli coleslaw in town. Their ham is also legendary.

I wasn’t going to go there for lunch on Thursday. I had planned on eating in The Grand Hotel but, as usual, the ‘old reliable’ was jam-packed with locals and tourists – bar and restaurant area!

Anyway, I’m glad it was because I had a good experience in The Mall. Der’s must offer the lowest priced lunches in town at €8.50.

On the menu were honey roast bacon and cabbage; stuffed chicken breast; fresh Atlantic salmon; chicken and mushroom vol au vent; homemade burgers and cajun chicken caesar salad.

There was also toasted special and chips for €7 and chowder for €5.50 and soup for €3.95 among other sandwiches and paninis.

I only felt like a sandwich, so I lined up with my tray and ordered an open brown bread with ham and coleslaw. The bread from their bakery is delicious and with the aforementioned coleslaw and ham (but disappointingly it wasn’t their ‘Christmas’ ham if you know what I mean) it provided for a very satisfying lunch.

There was a big crowd there too, filling the cafe area and stretching out in to the bar. My sandwich (€5) with tea came to a very reasonable  €6.90.

3.5/5
