Screen Shot 2015-01-02 at 16.33.19A NEW year and another meal out.

Over the course of the past eight months, I’ve  just about covered every place there is to eat lunch in town, so I decided to venture further afield on the first day of January.

This isn’t really a lunch review as it was 7pm by the time we got out to Kate Browne’s in Ardfert.

Over 10 years ago I was a very regular visitor to the well known hostelry in the village, as my wife and I lived in Ardfert for three years in the early noughties.

We had many great meals there over the years with family and friends and the service was always welcoming.

On New Year’s Day the place was packed, mainly with large family groups probably looking for something to do with most shops and other places closed.

Our party of three sat down and perused the menu. They had a set menu of two courses and tea/coffee for €21 or three courses and tea/coffee for €25.

The starters were (I’ll keep all the descriptions basic) breaded mushrooms, onion and chive cream soup, duck liver pate and brioche and deep fried brie (priced between €4.95 and €6.95).

The mains were bacon and cabbage, beef, salmon, turkey and ham, roast lamb and chicken supreme (priced between €14.50 and €17.95), while the desserts were sherry trifle, Christmas pudding, banoffi pie and strawberries and ice cream (priced between €5.25 and €5.75).

I decided to go for the bacon and cabbage and sherry trifle from the set menu, while my wife went for scampi from the ala carte . The four year old girl had simpler tastes and went for plain penne pasta and parmesan cheese.

It was a huge success. The huge portion of scampi was declared delicious, coming with superb homemade chips and a tasty salad.

My bacon and cabbage was excellent with three good slices of meat, gorgeous creamy mash and lovely parsley sauce.

The pasta, as always, was consumed with great enthusiasm.

The sherry trifle I passed on to my wife, as I’m not a great fan of custard, but she said it was grand without being great.

The bill for the three of us (my €21 set menu, scampi, pasta, ice-cream for the child, a glass of pinot grigio and tea) came to €54.

Kate Browne’s still turns out great food and it’s especially good for families as they are made so welcome.

Now, where to next…

4/5
