rsz_teach_beag_3WALKING around town this week it was plain to see most people had a spring in their step.

The All-Ireland has provided us with an unexpected boost going into the late autumn and as the phrase goes, “it’ll shorten the winter”.

I decided to head into the town centre for something quick for lunch on Wednesday so I wandered into An Teach Beag because I heard they do simple, good lunches.

I like Teach Beag. The  staff are always friendly and the place is usually rocking at night with live music and a livelier clientele.

In a previous life it was The Town And Country Bar and many’s a roast of the day I had there.

It was quiet when my wife and I entered (the glorious sunshine might have had something to do with that) so we took a seat to check out the menu.

Sandwiches, rolls, pittas, wraps and paninis are the order of the day here and reasonably priced too. Baked potatoes with a choice of fillings are €4.95 while a chicken caesar salad with brown bread is just €6.50.

I decided on a toasted cajun chicken pitta with fries and salad (€8.50) while my wife had the veggie panini (€5.50). We weren’t waiting long before the dishes arrived.

My plate was overflowing with chips – many of which I dumped into my wife’s plate – and the pitta looked good, complimented as it was with a nice salad and coleslaw.

My wife enjoyed her panini while I tucked into the pitta. The pitta bread itself was good and the cajun dressing was very tasty but the chicken let it down a little, despite being plentiful. The chicken wasn’t tasteless, it just wasn’t of the ‘just out of the oven’ variety, that’s all. I’m very picky about roast chicken.

The fries and salad were great and we both left stuffed and sated. The bill for tea, cappuccino, panini and pitta came to €18.50. Money well spent.

3.5/5
