Denny Lane 1Denny Lane Bistro

Denny Street

I SEEM to be running out of places to eat in Tralee.

I found this out while walking around town one afternoon, searching for an eaterie about which to write a review and finding I’d already covered about 22 places so far.

Then I remembered Denny Lane.

I used to eat there a bit when I worked for The Kerryman, seeing as it was so convenient across the lane way. I also seem to remember their scones were amazing and the staff from The Kerryman regularly made trips over for their takeaway coffees.

I hadn’t been there for over a year so I was surprised to see the place had changed a little bit.

There are now little partitions between the tables which is a nice touch and the place still retains that mix between old world charm and contemporary cool.

It was quiet when I went in after 2pm on a Thursday afternoon. The clientele was mainly made up of middle-aged women having coffee, a few hipsters and a couple of businessmen hatching plans for world (well, Tralee perhaps) domination.

I perused the specials menu and saw there were very tempting dishes; baked fillet of seatrout with stir fry veg and dill cream; peppered pork chops with sauté lyonnaise potatoes and roast stuffed turkey with honey baked ham, red wine jus and cranberry sauce.

Being in the mood for something lighter, I plumped for one of their ‘Healthy And Hearty Salads’.

The feta cheese and black olive Greek salad (€8.50) caught my eye because I love olives. One of the things I really like about travelling to Spain or France is that they plonk a bowl of olives (normally with a bit of bread and chorizo) in front of you when you order a beer in some pubs.

Anyway, the salad came with sundried tomato (another favourite), cucumber and a really nice, tangy dressing.

When it arrived I thought it looked a bit mangy in the big pasta bowl, with just a thin slice of brown bread, but looks were deceiving.

All of it was delicious with generous portions of cheese and olives, though I still think a second thin slice of bread is warranted. It sated my appetite and a good cappuccino washed it down.

I’ll be taking a trip down Denny Lane pretty soon again.
