Kirby’s Brogue Inn
Rock Street
I HAD intended on writing an ‘Out To Lunch’ on tour this week, seeing as I was ‘out foreign’ this week but then I had a change of mind.
It’s not much good to readers of this column to be extolling the culinary delights of a Spanish restaurant that nobody will ever eat in, in a town resort where few Irish people visit.
Instead, before I left for the airport I called into an old favourite; Kirby’s Brogue Inn.
For all the coverage TraleeToday.ie gave to both the news that it was to re-open and of the re-opening itself, I actually realised I hadn’t eaten there yet (I have had a few pints and coffees there though!).

The lunch hour rush had passed by the time I went in there on Tuesday, but there was still a good few having a bite.
Forgoing the excellent selection of carvery lunches, I felt like a sandwich and the blackboard gave a mighty selection.
Rolls, baps, wraps, toasted sandwiches, open brown ones, closed sambos, slightly ajar (just kidding), whatever you want they got. Not to mention the lasagnes, quiche and salads.

In the end I went for an open brown with smoked salmon with a choice of four salads for €6.95.
I got celery and apple, pasta salad with kidney beans and chickpeas and potato salad. Fiona brought me the huge feed and I tucked in.
It was delicious and the smoked salmon was great, coming with lemon and red onion on very tasty brown bread.
It was the perfect reminder before I left the country that there’s no place like home for seafood and good hospitality.
