WELL-KNOWN Tralee woman Mairead Fernane decided to shave off her hair in aid of the Kerry Hospice Foundation and in memory of her niece who passed away last September.

The former Fine Gael town councillor and staunch Austin Stacks clubwoman has been volunteering with Kerry Hospice for years but decided to do something extra after the care Marlene Fernane received last year.

On Saturday evening she shaved off most of her hair and has raised over €2,400 so far in the process through a fundraising page.

“As many of you will know my niece, Marlene Fernane passed away last year after a very brief illness,” said Mairead on her Everyday Hero fundraising page.

“She received wonderful care from all the Staff at Kerry Hospice. Although I have been volunteering with the hospice for many years, Marlene’s short illness and the time she spent in the hospice gave me and her family a different appreciation of the vital support given by the Team at Kerry Hospice to families at what is an extremely difficult time.”
