Mary And Marian Among Those To Be Honoured By Council With Awards

Mary O’Brien and Marian Barnes will be honoured by Tralee MD this Thursday.

TWO women who have contributed so much to the local community in Tralee and Kerry will be honoured this week at the annual Kerry County Council and Municipal District Awards ceremony.

Taking place this Thursday night at the Rose Hotel, Tralee at 7pm, founder of Recovery Haven-Kerry Marian Barnes and Mary O’Brien of Tralee Tidy Towns will be honoured for their community spirit and service by the Tralee Municipal District.

Presentation Secondary School Under-16 Basketball Team who won Double National Basketball Titles in 2018 and Blackbelt Martial Arts Academy who won many medal wins and successes in 2018 will also be honoured by Tralee MD.

There will also be Kerry County Council awards, presented by the Cathaoirleach, Cllr Norma Foley, to the Kerry Minor Football Team on winning their fifth All-Ireland title in a row; the Kerry Under-21 Hurling Team, winners of the All-Ireland B competition for the second year in a row; Friends of Kerry University Hospital for 30 years supporting the services provided by University Hospital Kerry; Kerry members of the Irish Swimming Team for their participation in the Haliwick Games 2018; the Knocknagoshel Halloween Group for 25 years fundraising for charities at County, National and International level and Listowel Writers’ Week for winning Best Irish Festival at Irish Hospitality Awards 2018.

Listowel Muncipal District will honour Paul Donegan on his invention of the PTO-SENSE human detection system; Isabel Shaw for winning three gold medals at the World Martial Arts Organisation Championship 2018; Shane Conway, winner of the Bord Gais Hurling All Ireland U-21 Player of the Year and Donagh McElligott and Ciara Shannon, mentors of Ceoltóirí Na Ceolainne Grúpa Cheoil 15-18 Munster Fleadh Cheoil champions 2018.

Killarney Municipal District will have seven award recipients which are the St. Mary’s Senior Ladies Basketball Team, winners of the NICC Women’s National Cup 2018; Spa GAA Set Dancers, winners of All-Ireland Scór na nÓg Set Dancing Title 2018; Damien Fleming, National Senior Men’s Strokeplay Pitch & Putt Champion & Irish International Open Champion 2018; Killarney Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in recognition of its All-Ireland successes in Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2018; Kilcummin Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, in recognition of its All-Ireland successes in Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2018; Jordan Lee, Bronze medalist at the WPA European Championships 2018 and Kerry U-16 Pitch & Putt Team, National Inter-County Champions 2018.

South & West Municipal District will honour the Glenbeigh Handballers on their success at the Handball World Championships 2018;  Kathryn Shaw, winner of the over-50s world championship with the Irish hockey team 2018; Nagle Rice Community Group on its contribution to the community in Milltown and Tom Murphy on his many years of community and voluntary service.
