RECENTLY I was asked to give a talk to students about beauty.

The principal, who is male, asked me to get across that if a woman looks like she has no makeup on, then she’s got it right.

I was very impressed with his knowledge of my world. So it got me thinking, what do men hate about the cosmetics world?

Fake tan

It is not okay to be orange, men are not lovers of this look and the biscuit smell associated with fake tan is a no-no.

I heard a story about this lad who was mad about this girl but broke it off purely because he could not cope with the smell of fake tan. Tan odours have improved though – vita liberata and he-shi tans are very good and are almost odourless.

Perfume overload

Men are not big fans of having to stand two feet back to have a conversation with you, not to mind anything else.

Take it easy while applying as people’s senses are different and what may seem just right to you could kill all plant forms in a two mile radius.

Spray perfume in front of you and then walk into the mist and the perfume is distributed evenly.

Foundation

Foundation not blended and the colour of foundation too dark, resulting in the dreaded V.J.L.(visible jaw line).

Boots have brought out a service that matches skin tone with your foundation, so there are no visible lines. Blending with a good foundation brush also works wonders. Estee Lauder have just launched a brilliant one.

Smokey Eyes

Smokey eyes are meant to be sexy but it can all go easily wrong with the flick of the wrong colour and add in a night on the town and what seemed sexy at the start of the night can be plain scary.

Photographers are not big fans of smoky eyes as sometimes it can look to dark in photos, so keep this in mind if you are having professional photos.

Too Much Mascara

No man wants to sit across from itsy bitsy spider and be in fear that your eyelashes may get up and walk out of the restaurant by themselves.

Comb the lashes with a brush after applying mascara, an old toothbrush also works. Lash tinting in your salon looks very natural.

Lipstick

Neon lipstick does not seem to do it for the lads. Lip gloss is a magnet for food and crumbs embedded on your lips is not very classy.

Outlining lips too dark can be very distracting for guys as all they will want to do is get a giant crayon and colour you in.

Keep lip liner and lipstick close in colour and avoid any distractions.

Hair

Running his fingers through your luscious locks seems very romantic but if there is product overload and if he is in fear of losing a digit, the romance dies very quickly.Hairspray maybe a girls best friend but the lads don’t like the feel or smell of it.

Powder

The fine line between shine and over caked is literally a fine one.

A slight dusting is all that is needed to keep make-up on and prevent shine and throughout the day just visit the powder room.

Unwanted Hair

Underarm hair that looks like it needs a personal hairdresser is not a favourite look for boys and when Julia Roberts showed hers off at a premiere it was men not women that were more disgusted.

Clutter

The amount of space we take up with all our products seems another bone of contention. New products, old faithfuls, hair care, skin care and not to mention make-up, but gals when we get it right the love it!
