THE query I am asked most frequently (besides ‘Mum , where is….?’) is about red veins.

Our celtic skin is fair and sensitive and is prone to red veins.

A lady recently told me she applies her makeup then goes out. If there is a fire or alcohol, within half an hour her redness comes out through the makeup and she feels uncomfortable and when she looks in the mirror all she wants  to do is go home.

There are many potions and lotions on the market for redness but the only permanent solution is laser.

So as it such a common complaint, I took myself to Solasdermatology and laser clinic in Ashe Street.

Dr. David Buckley introduced me to nlite -v pulsed dye laser, which is a revolutionary non-invasive laser treatment that treats broken veins, port-wine staining, rosacea, cherry and spider angioma and haemangioma.

A yellow light beam passes through through the top layer of skin specifically targeting the blood vessels in the dermal layer underneath that born vasularity.

These vessels are heated and damaged and the body’s natural process is stimulated to repair this damage and reduce the appearance of the condition.

As long as I can remember, I blushed so easy, but as I got older I also felt the redness come through makeup and felt uncomfortable.

A lot of males and females can identify with me and know how embarrassing it can be.

Dr Buckley explained to me that he has a lot of male patients also who, unlike the ladies, do not have the help of makeup to cover the problem.

So the first step is a consultation with a trained operator to find out if you are suitable for the treatment and how treatments will be required.

As the number of session required varies from person to person, most people with red veins on the face require 2-3 treatments with a month in between treatments.

So I had my first treatment on Wednesday, there is no need for anaesthesia or invasive needles. It was very bearable and felt like a mild heat sensation.

The only place I felt it more was around the nose. The whole face was complete within 30 mins. It did feel hot and I had a few mild bruises.

The bruises darken within 24 hrs and start it faded within 48 hrs. The bruises can be hidden with Vichy Dermablend.

The next day there was mild swelling which was gone down within 2 days. Four days on I can cover it very easily and feel my high colouring is well reduced after one session.

The products I used in skincare was a new cleanser from La Roche posay called cicaplast wash B5. It is soothing and repairing gel cleanser and can be used by the whole family and can also be used on scalps and on the body.

I found this cleanse so soothing after my treatment. The cream I used was Eucerin called Acqaphor and this heals the skin from within and I always have this with me as it is great for minor burns and cuts.

My advice? If red veins are a problem for you, go along and have a consultation as you will find if you are suitable for treatment and how many you will need and this consultation is free of charge.
