A KERRY-BASED artist has donated one of her paintings for a raffle in aid of an African orphanage set up by a Tralee woman.

Maureen O’Mahony’s piece featuring two children in Kerry jerseys is called ‘The Lads’ and keeps up the GAA-related theme to her work.

She was moved to donate the painting after seeing the film ‘Kilimanjaro Mama’ about Louise Quill from Tralee who set up the Tír Na nÓg Orphanage in Tanzania.

“I saw the excellent documentary ‘Kilimanjaro Mama’ and thought it was a beautiful and uplifting story. From that, I got in touch with Louise. We discussed a GAA themed painting as a fundraiser” said Maureen.

“Every year I give a piece of art as a fundraiser. Most of my business is GAA related and usually of young children. The title ‘The Lads’ is very fitting in today’s multi-cultural and multi-racial Ireland. I also want to normalise the image of people of colour wearing a GAA jersey and to showcase the GAA as an inclusive organisation.” explained Maureen.

This painting worth over €1,500 euro will be raffled off to one lucky winne. If you would like to buy a raffle ticket, to be in with a chance of winning this painting, please click the link below: https://www.idonate.ie/raffle/12627_the-lads.html.

Meanwhile, work on the Children’s Village Project at the Tír Na nÓg Orphanage is due to start soon according to Louise Quill.

“Regarding our building project, we have received our construction date for August so the building will be starting then. We look forward to beginning this new journey with the Tir na nOg orphanage,” said Louise Quill.

The building project in conjunction with NGO ‘Article 25’ will consist of 6 cottage style houses to cater for 60 children and babies. Each house will cater for 10 children and live in “Mama”. The houses will be complete with solar panels, bathroom, shower, covered verandas and play area.

Once this goal has been reached, the aim is to build a communal dining hall, library space, guest house and large recreation space for the children to play and run around in. To fund the entire project, Louise is hoping to raise a total of €1m.
