THE Mayor of Tralee has called on the people of Tralee to show pride in their town and report people who are seen dumping rubbish illegally in town.

Cllr Terry O’Brien was speaking at the meeting of Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council on Monday after the council received a deputation from Tidy Tralee Together hearing about the great work that is done by the group.

The Mayor said there were certain parts of town where people were dumping bags of rubbish in the dead of night and it had to be tackled. He said it was time the public stood up, took pride in their town and reported them.

Crows spreading rubbish around a half open bin at around 8pm last night in town.

The issue of businesses leaving their bins out the night before collection was also brought up, as some bins were left partially open and crows were able to pick apart the rubbish and leave it strewn across a wide area.

Cllr Norma Foley also has a motion about CCTV cameras at Short Mountain where she said the situation with illegal dumping there is unacceptable and reprehensible and needed to be tackled aggressively.

She said something more had to be done in terms of policing the situation and that it was doing irreparable damage to the reputation of the town and area.

Council said there was one successful prosecution for dumping at the area in 2016 and that covert cameras are being used from time to time.

All councillors and council management had great praise for amazing work being done by the Tralee Tidy Together group.
