KERRY County Council is to apply to An Taisce for the Green Flag for our Town Park.

Mayor of Tralee Cllr Graham Spring put forward the motion, at Monday’s meeting of Tralee Municipal District councillors, to consider applying for the the Green Flag considering the reception that this award receives both nationally and internationally in relation to quality and attractiveness of green spaces.

He stated that the criteria required include horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement, all of which are valued qualities and are currently visible or practiced in the Park.

The Park hosts the Park Run and Junior Park runs weekly as the Féile na mBláth in June and events during the Rose Festival among other activities throughout the year.

Cllr Terry O’Brien agreed with the motion, saying the Town Park, unlike the National Park in Killarney, is paid for by the Tralee MD budget and therefore by the people of the town. “It’s a fantastic facility and not enough credit it given to it,” he said.

Council management said they will seek to advance an application for the 35 acre park with a view to submitting it before the closing date of 2019a applications which is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
