THE Mayor of Tralee has called for additional facilities at a popular local amenity to attract more people when COVID restrictions are lifted.

In a motion at last week’s online meeting of Tralee Municipal District councillors, Cllr. Terry O’Brien asked that the Council urgently investigate the upgrading of the facilities available to the public at the Tralee Bay Wetlands.

Mayor O’Brien said the Wetlands was a fabulous facility, but felt it was under-utilised. He called for the introduction of ziplines and other new attractions to entice more families to the amenity.

He said it was already a great addition to the town, with a lovely cafe, but he urged the Board to do more.

In reply, Council management said through its Board of Management and Executive representation from Kerry County Council, services and facilities at Tralee Bay Wetlands are under ongoing review and development.

During the period of closure, in line with Government restrictions due to Covid-19, the priority has been to continue to provide a safe and accessible public facility to the local population.

To this end, management and staff at the Wetlands have worked closely with Tralee MD and the facilities team to prioritise health and safety and maintenance of existing facilities, ensuring that the facility is in compliance with all public safety advice.

Also at the meeting, Mayor O’Brien called on the Council to organise an urgent meeting with the Directors of the Aquadome to ensure its prompt re-opening.

In reply, the Council said the opening and operation of the Aquadome is a matter for the Directors of the Company and while the council recognises the importance of the Aquadome as an attraction for both the tourism sector and local community, it cannot involve itself in the decision to reopen the facility.

Mayor O’Brien said while he understood it was a private company, it was important the Council sends a message of support.
