McCann At The Movies: ‘Venom’ Is Loud And Brash, But Ultimately Disappointing

The latest Marvel offering ‘Venom’ is a missed opportunity says John McCann…

Another week, another Marvel movie, seems to be the story when it comes to big screen adventures at times but this week’s film Venom was one that whereas I may not have been overly enthused about, the prospect of seeing what Tom Hardy could bring to the comic book genre was enough to have me intrigued.

With 2D and MAXX screenings at Tralee Omniplex there was also plenty of opportunity to sample blockbuster whirlwind effect that these movies often bring.

The premise of Venom was simple; Journalist Eddie Brock (Hardy) attempts a comeback following a scandal, but accidentally becomes the host of an alien growth that gives him a violent super alter-ego: Venom.

Soon, he must rely on his newfound powers to protect the world from a shadowy and extremely dangerous organisation.

Venom.

As forgetful that the marvel movies can sometimes be, in my opinion, this year has brought a marked increase in quality and enjoyment in these productions and have been in the whole fun and entertaining affairs.

Venom unfortunately does not fall in to this category despite the addition of consistent and talented actor at the helm.

The problem largely lies with the fact that director Rueben Fleisher is not sure what kind of film he wants to make.

At times it’s not quite clear what type of film Venom is with it fluctuating from a violent horror to a superhero action thriller and at times fancying itself as a buddy comedy.

With no tone strong enough it the film becomes (like the alien symbiote itself) a bit of mess – and a loud one at that!

Chaotic, noisy and eventually tiresome is sadly the end result of a feature that looks as if it was rushed to end production just to feed the masses!

A lot of superhero movies tend to live or die not only by their swashbuckling effects but also their humour and Venom sadly lacks in both.

Regrettably with the budget, cast and back story that Venom contained, this must go down as something of a missed opportunity and one that by and large was a huge disappointment!
