MEMBERS of the Mitchels Boherbee Historical & Heritage Group gathered at The Rose Hotel on Monday evening to launch their 10th annual calendar ‘Memories Of Times Gone By’.

The calendar is always a must have for residents in the area and indeed for people from Mitchels/Boherbee who now live elsewhere.

The call went out back in April for contributions for this year’s calendar with a focus on women, local achievements and community spirit. The calendar also contains a map of the Mitchels area from the 1930s showing the drawings for Kevin Barrys Villas.

The regeneration of the area is not far from completion now and Johnnie Wall from the group is very impressed.

“The area is nearly finished and it’s a fantastic job. People really want to live there now. The old houses were in terrible condition, but it’s all changed,” said Johnnie Wall.

The group has created a digital archive on www.mitchelsregeneration.com to allow family and friends abroad or for those who may not have access to the CDs or calendars to access the local history. Calendars can also be obtained from the library or from members of the group.

The archive details how times have changed with stories about the struggle for independence, rationing, life without modern conveniences and how society has changed.
