MERCY Mounthawk first year basketballers can be proud of their achievements at the weekend, after they made it to the All-Ireland Schools League Final played at UL.

After winning five games on the trot against teams from Cork, Wicklow, Antrim, Dublin and Cavan, they faced Presentation Brothers Cork in the final on Sunday afternoon.

It was Pres who started the better capitalising on poor transition defence from Mounthawk. But Mounthawk came back and the half time with the score at 19-16.

But a third quarter left Mounthawk down by seven. At the start of the 4th quarter Mounthawk switched to a zone.

Pres found this very hard to break down turning over the ball multiple times and Mounthawk bought the game back level.

But Pres went ahead with a basket inside with less than a minute left and held on to win 32-30.

Coach John Dowling was very proud of his charges.

“We were disappointed at losing the final by the smallest of margins, but with six games in two days, it is a real test of the boys hard work and dedication over the years.

“Having won the final last year it is a remarkable achievement by the school to get all the way to the final again this year with a completely new team.

“We are looking forward to working with the team for next few years and would like to thank them and their parents for their commitment to the school basketball programme,” he concluded.
