Mercy Mounthawk Choir Joins With Scotia Ensemble For Concerts

THE choir at Mercy Mounthawk are teaming up with the Scotia Ensemble for  a number of concerts over the next fortnight.

Joined by celtic soprano Catriona O’Sullivan, the first concert takes place this Saturday evening at 7.30pm at Mercy Mounthawk Secondary School in town.

The concerts will feature songs from Irish classical composers and from traditional music, together with some inspirational music, to entertain audiences in venues in Tralee, Killarney, Dingle and Kenmare.

Scotia Ensemble is Kerry’s only resident professional orchestra and is made up of professional musicians from around the county who have played in orchestras all over the world.

Mercy Mounthawk is the only school in Tralee with music and choir on the timetable as examination subjects. The school choir has grown from around 30 members to a current membership of 60 and they have performed at the CEIST and JMB national conferences as well as placing at the Cork Choral Festival Competition.

Caitriona O’Sullivan, is a Tralee native who holds first class honours degrees and master’s degrees in music, and specialises in Irish traditional music. Not only does she teach at Mercy Mounthawk, where she is also the co-director of the choir, she is a professional soprano who has performed in venues all over the world.

She has also had chart success as a singer-songwriter and has appeared on television and radio nationwide and has been a judge on “Glor Tire” on TG4 for 13 years.

The choir and students, together with Caitriona O’Sullivan will be accompanied by the Scotia Ensemble in beautiful arrangements of Irish and Inspirational music such as Feels Like Home, Raglan Road, The Parting Glass and many more. The concerts take place on the following dates:-

• Mercy Secondary School Mounthawk, Tralee, Saturday 4th March 2017
• The Friary, Killarney, Sundau 5th March 2017;
• St James Church, Dingle, Saturday 11th March 2017;
• St Patricks Church, Kenmare, Sunday 12th March 2017

    Lovely performance but the Mounthawk Choir should have featured a lot more. Pity! Well done to all .Hope for more concerts, possibly in conjunction with other school choirs and ensembles.
    Young talent , of which there is plenty in the county , needs this type of exposure.
