MERCY Secondary School Mounthawk’s LEGO League robotics team (Mounthawk Masterminds) has made it to the final round of the first Lego League competition this weekend.

The team competed in the Galway Regional Final on March 10 and saw the team showcase their skills and abilities across four areas: Robot Game, Robot design, Core Values, and Innovation project.

The competition was fierce, but the Mounthawk team rose to the challenge and emerged victorious. Their project focused on renewable energy and they presented a unique idea of a “Hybrid solar-biomass Microgrid System” for their school.

This system will be similar to the Tralee District Heating System and will use various types of biomass to fuel the system.

The team presented their project last week to the Deputy Mayor of Tralee, Terry O’Brien and Peter Colleran from the Tralee District Heating Scheme.

The idea was well-received and the team is now looking forward to showcasing their project at the final event, which is scheduled for this Saturday, March 25 in Dublin, where they will compete against other top teams from around the country.

Coach and mentor Ms. Sadhbh Brosnan stated; “The team’s success in the competition is a shining example of their commitment to excellence and innovation. As a school community we are very proud of their success so far and wish them the best of luck for the final event in Dublin.”
