U8: Our under 8 girls team got off the mark on this morning against Fossa in Gortroe. Well done to Deirdre O’Sullivan and her fantastic team of coaches for preparing the girls for their first game of the year. Many thanks to the home side Fossa for a fantastic morning of matches, we hope to welcome them to Paddy Burke Memorial Park later in the summer.

U9: The U 9 boys were also out this morning and after a fantastic series of games against Kilcummin last year it was a pleasure to welcome the east Kerry team for a game on the brand new surface here at Milltown/Castlemaine GAA grounds. Just like last year the games were well contested. Our Milltown/Castlemaine U9s showed a maturity beyond their years with some great team play picking out teammates with passes throughout the morning, well done to both sets of teams. Thank you to Paul Twiss, Liam Doherty for organising a great morning of football.

U10: Our U10 Girls were out for the first time this year yesterday against Legion in Killarney. James Daly and his team of coaches have done a super job preparing the U10 girls and it showed as there was some fantastic football played. Thank you to hosts Legion we hope to welcome you for the return fixture later this year.

U11: It was a brilliant and busy week for our U11 Boys. The coaching team led by Gary Murphy have again done a fantastic job preparing the team over the passed 6 weeks. There was no training this week but a challenge match against Keel on Tuesday helped both teams to prepare for the upcoming Go Games. There was some fantastic football played on the evening by both teams.
The U11 team  then moved on to Ballymac for the first of their Lee Strand County Go Games and again performed brilliantly on the night, that hard work in training and practicing at home definitely shone on this week for our U11s.

U13: Kenmare Shamrocks 3-03 V 3-23 Milltown/Castlemaine Green
Our U13 Green team just made the cut for the notes with the matches playing just a couple of hours ago on this sunny Sunday evening. Our U13 White Teams game has been postponed until next Friday evening but our Green team travelled south to face Kenmare Shamrocks.

Well done to our U13 Green team who played some scintillating football in Kenmare this evening with incredible skill, guile and teamwork on show. They scored high and scored several fantastic team scores.

U15:  Listowel Emmets 4-09 V 7-12 Milltown/Castlemaine Green
Our U15 team were also on the road and at home this week starting when the Green Team made the trip to North Kerry. Listowel Emmets the opposition and it was a tight affair in the first half with the game balanced on one point in favour of the home team at halftime with some missed opportunities from our U15s. It remained close with the home side extending their lead to four at the second half water break but six second half goals were to prove the difference for our visiting team in a fantastic second half performance, clinically taking their chances to get a great win.

Milltown/Castlemaine White 7-13 V 4-11 Keel/Listry B

In an exciting game our neighbours Keel/Listry on Friday evening our Milltown/Castlemaine team finished up with the win to get there Division 10 South of to a great start. Just the 3 points in it at half time with our under 15s leading by a score of 3-06 to 3-03 but there was to be a lot of scores notched in the second half with fantastic displays all over the field, the final score reading Milltown/Castlemaine 7-13 v 4-11. Well done to all the players.

Minor:

It was great start to our minors year this week with a fantastic win on the road against Listowel Emmets:

Listowel Emmets 3-09 V 4-13 Milltown/Castlemaine

A fantastic win for our minor side in their first game back, well done to the players, their coaching team and to their opponents Listowel Emmett’s on a great game.

The game saw our minors raise the green flag four times and fantastic performances all over the field. Dara Hogan, Liam Roche x 2 & Rian Foley got the goals and shortly after his goal Rian was unfortunately taken off with an injury everyone at Milltown/Castlemaine GAA wishes him a speedy recovery.

Well done to all the players and coaches again on a fantastic win next up in the round two and the team’s first home fixture of the year against Kenmare Shamrocks.

Unfortunately the opposition were unable to field a team on Saturday even so the Senior Bs first game of the year will have to wait. The Senior A team got off to a winning start this weekend in North Kerry, read all about it in Dara O’Connors report below:

St Senan’s 0-09 Milltown/Castlemaine 1-10

By Dara O’Connor

Milltown/Castlemaine journeyed to North Kerry on this glorious Sunday afternoon for the much anticipated season opener where they met St Senan’s in Mountcoal. After many months with no sporting action, the sense of relief from the players, management, club officials and indeed the supporters of both sides at once again seeing the GAA in full flow was palpable and heartening.

Division 3 this season has been divided into two sections with 6 sides contesting each group. The top team in 3A and 3B will be promoted to Division 2 next season whilst the second placed teams in either side will meet in a playoff to decide who is the third side to move up. The same principle applies in respect of relegation with the bottom sides in each group moving down to Division 4 and the two 5th placed sides squaring off to decide the final team to be relegated.

The hosts were quickest out of the blocks and took the lead through a 21 metre free. It took Milltown/Castlemaine six minutes to open their account and it came through the boot of sharpshooter Cathal Moriarty following some great build-up play by his partner in the full-forward line Jonathan O’Sullivan who broke through two defensive challenges and squared to Moriarty who found the net and set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. O’Sullivan followed this up in the 8th and 9th minutes with one free from distance and a lovely point on the turn from play which allowed the visitors to open up a 1-2 to 0-1 lead. Both sides exchanged points in the 11th and 15th minutes with Cathal Moriarty scoring a point off his left which was replied to through a free and at the water break it was 1-3 to 0-2 in our favour.

There is a feeling that whilst these water breaks serve a purpose with Covid-19 still a present danger and hydration hugely important (not to mention the opportunity for teams to regroup) that they can also disrupt momentum and that seemed to be the case for Milltown/Castlemaine as the home side landed two points from play in the 20th and 21st minutes from the full back and centre forward which seen the gap reduced to two at 1-3 to 0-4. Cathal Moriarty got an important score for the visitors in the 23rd minute which stemmed the tide and this was quickly followed with points from the talented Dylan O’Neil and Jonathan O’Sullivan after he took a mark 14 metres out to stretch our lead out to 1-6 to 0-4 approaching the half time break. St Senan’s remained resilient however and two points before the interval (one from a mark and the other from play) seen just three points separate both sides as they retired for the break, scores at 1-6 to 0-6.

A strong start to the second half from St Senan’s seen them whittle the lead back to the bare minimum at 1-6 to 0-8, however Milltown/Castlemaine kept calm and with their inside full-forward line in brilliant form and linking well, they always knew if quality ball could be got into them then they would step up accordingly with the required scores and that proved to be the case. Not to be outdone as a defender however, roaming wing back Kieran O’Carroll landed a much needed point for Milltown/Castlemaine in the 38th minute to keep their noses in front and this propelled the visitors into a scoring burst either side of the water break in the second half as Dylan O’Neil, Jonathan O’Sullivan (free) and Cathal Moriarty seen us open up a five point lead at 1-10 to 0-8.

Milltown/Castlemaine could have seen out the game more comfortably after they were awarded a penalty, however it sailed just wide of the post and despite the hosts adding a late point, the gap remained at four and Milltown/Castlemaine emerged deserving victors it must be said having led for most the afternoon.

Well done to the players and management involved for starting the year on a positive and thanks to the supporters who made the trip to support the side today in Mountcoal.

In Round 2 next weekend, Milltown/Castlemaine will play host to near neighbours Laune Rangers in an eagerly awaited encounter.
