GAA 4 ALL:

Last Monday evening our GAA 4 ALL group welcomed a special guest coach Mags Harmon who was absolutely fantastic as our players and coaches danced, jumped and laughed all evening. We wish to also give a huge thank you to all of the coaches on our GAA 4 All team for their amazing dedication every week.

U7 Boys:

This morning our U7 teams played  their very first games  of the year, in an action packed encounter with Austin Stacks in Tralee. The games were end to end and there were some great skills on show. Well done to all the players, their coaches and  to the players parents for travelling to the game this morning.

U9 Boys:

Also away to Austin Stacks this morning were our 9s fresh from their first game of the year against Kilcummin last week. The U9s were warming top for the first game of their Go Games on Tuesday next against Beaufort and Stacks proved a great opponent to do just that in this mornings challenge game.

The young Stacks played very well and our U9 teams had to produce some fantastic skills against them. The Milltown/Castlemaine players once again showing that they have been practicing hard with some fantastic teamwork and football.

U10:

The U10 girls had two matches this week, the first against Fossa was their second game of the season and we had 3 teams in action. The girls had some fantastic games and produced good performances on a very warm evening.

On Sunday morning there were 2 teams in action against 2 teams from Listry and 1 team from Keel. Our Milltown/Castlemaine teams played some great football in best performance of the season so far. There were fine individual performances all over the field with tenacious tackling, superb scores,  and great attitude from all the players.

U11:

Kilcummin brought 30 plus players to Paddy Burke Memorial Park on Thursday evening last to play our U11s which meant we had three fantastic games running simultaneously. There was some excellent skill on show across all three games.

Well done to the players who were on top in all three games against a good Kilcummin side. Thanks to all the coaches for having the players prepared and to the volunteers on the night making everything run smoothly.

A special word of thanks to Adam Scanlon, Shane O’Connor and Linus Og Burke our referees on the night.

U13 Green Team:
The U13 Green team faced a trip to Spa this Sunday evening and had a great win on the road as they beat the host team Milltown/Castlemaine 4-09 V 0-06 Spa. A fantastic display in goals by Ciaran Murphy was one of many fine displays on the night. A great performance from the team which gives them their second win maintaining their unbeaten record after their win at Kenmare last Sunday.

U13 White Team:
The U13 Milltown/Castlemaine White team had two wait a week longer to get their year underway as their games with Dr Crokes rescheduled for Friday evening last. They did not get the win that evening but there was some fantastic skill and teamwork on show.

The White team followed this up with another away day, this time it was back into East Kerry to face Kilcummin on Sunday evening. The team battled hard but the home side again took the win. The white are making great progress though and will look forward to their first home game against Legion next weekend.

U15 Green Team:
There was double header in Milltown on Wednesday evening as both U15 teams came up against Killarney Legion. The second game of the evening was the green teams turn and it was a closely fought battle at the halftime mark with the score at Milltown/Castlemaine 3-07 V 4-04 Legion.

A strong second half performance saw the visiting team take the win in the second game of the evening. Both teams played well on the night and despite a number of goals on the score board finishing 6-10 to 8-14, both goalkeepers were in great shot stopping form making several incredible saves this evening.

Next up for our U15 Green Team is a short trip over the Laune to play Laune Rangers next week.

U15 White Team:
In the first game on Wednesday evening also against Legion our U13 White side had a great win. In the Div 9A clash again in was still in the balance our home side leading by 3-07 to 2-04. More of the same from our U13s in the second half as our U13s ran out convincing winners in the end Milltown/Castlemaine 6-12 V 3-08 Killarney Legion.

Next up for our white team also the short trip over the river Laune to face Laune Rangers next Wednesday night.

Senior A Game:

Goals Prove Crucial for Visitors in Local Derby

County Senior Football League

Division 3B, Round 2

Venue: Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown

Referee: Padraig O’Sullivan (Firies)

Report by Dara O’Connor

Milltown/Castlemaine 1-15 Laune Rangers 5-05

Milltown/Castlemaine welcomed near neighbours and Mid Kerry rivals Laune Rangers to Paddy Burke Memorial Park in Milltown this afternoon for Round 2 of the County Senior Football League Division 3B.

Both sides started off the competition on a winning note the week previous with Milltown/Castlemaine winning against St Senan’s and Laune Rangers defeated North Kerry opposition also in the form of Duagh so the occasion was set up nicely for what promised to be a good contest between two clubs who need no introduction to one another.

The home sided started the brighter and early scores from Jonathan O’Sullivan and Cathal Moriarty, all from play gave Laune Rangers plenty to ponder as they were slow out of the blocks and struggled to match Milltown/Castlemaine’s intensity and hunger.

Laune Rangers settled however and as the scoreline suggests found the back of the net on no fewer than five occasions throughout the afternoon which gave them a very solid foundation to eventually go on and win the game.

Their first score came in the 12th minute from Roan Moriarty who pointed from close range. Soon after Gearoid Hassett was brought to the ground inside the small square and Padraig O’Sullivan showed no hesitation in awarding a penalty which John Tyther stepped up and slotted underneath the outstretched arm of Cormac Leane.

Almost immediately, another green flag followed when a short kickout from the hosts was intercepted and Shane Daly squared for Fiachra Clifford who had the simplest of tasks in firing home. Laune Rangers had in the space of a couple minutes opened up a 2-1 to 0-3 lead and seemingly turned the game on its head. It left Milltown/Castlemaine stunned but they knuckled down and gradually reeled their neighbours in.

Two Jonathan O’Sullivan frees and a superb Cathal Moriarty goal after a ball was turned over by a combination of Stephen/David Roche when Laune Rangers were coming out of defence seen Milltown/Castlemaine race back into the lead at 1-5 to 2-1 by the 25th minute.

Further points, including one for the cameras by roaming Corner-Back Gavin McKenna off his left boot and a score from the hardworking David Roche seen Milltown/Castlemaine stretch their lead to three by the 29th minute at 1-7 to 2-1.

The visitors seemed to find their scores (particularly goals) easier to come by and a third green flag was raised on the 30th minute as Fiachra Clifford latched onto a loose ball close to the M/C goal right after John Tyther has been dispossessed and he knocked it into the net in soccer style to draw the sides level at 3-1 to 1-7.

It was the hosts however who once again showed their mettle and responded well to go into the half-time interval two ahead at 1-9 to 3-1 after Jerome Flynn and Dylan O’Neil both had fine scores from play. HT Score: M/C 1-9 Laune Rangers 3-1.

In contrast to the opening half, it was Laune Rangers who emerged the more energetic from the half-time break and two Fiachra Clifford frees seen matters all tied up once more at 3-3 to 1-9.

Three Jonathan O’Sullivan frees between the 39th and 44th minutes after fouls had been committed on O’Sullivan, David Roche and Cathal Moriarty stretched the hosts lead back out to three at 1-12 to 3-03 and in a commanding position as they headed for the water break on the 45th minute.

It could have been a larger advantage but Corner-Back Gavin McKenna who went on another long run seen a terrific effort come back off the post after David Roche had put him through on goal and Roche himself also seen a pointed effort come back off the upright so a bit of misfortune prevented the lead from being extended further at this point. It was to prove telling as the final quarter was where Laune Rangers did most their damage.

A second penalty arrived for Laune Rangers in the 54th minute when Cormac Leane took down an on-rushing forward who had rounded him and was about to slot home. Leane was given a black card for the infringement and John Tyther stuck the resulting spot kick away into the right corner beyond stand-in goalkeeper Sean Hogan to make it level pegging at 4-3 to 1-12.

With Milltown/Castlemaine now down to 14 men it was always going to be difficult to navigate a path to victory and so it proved. Despite this obstacle, they did get the next score when Jonathan O’Sullivan pointed from 14 yards after Pa Wren had been fouled.

The lead didn’t last long and within a minute Fiachra Clifford had levelled matters again at 4-4 to 1-13 approaching the final minutes of normal time.

Crucially for the visiting side, they took the lead for the first time since the 13th minute with three minutes of normal time remaining as substitute Darragh O’Connor was fouled 14 yards out and John Tyther had an easy free to make it 4-5 to 1-13.

The score that ultimately swung the result in Laune Rangers direction came in the 58th minute from Stephen Sealy as he palmed home to the back of the Milltown/Castlemaine net after Peter Crowley had burst through the defence to set Sealy up. They now led 5-5 to 1-13 and it was hard to see a way back for the hosts with the clock against them. Milltown/Castlemaine never gave up and did succeed in reducing the arrears to two points as Jonathan O’Sullivan landed two points from frees but try as they might, they could not get any closer and Laune Rangers ran out two point victors on a score of: Laune Rangers 5-05 Milltown/Castlemaine 1-15.

Division 6B, Round 2

Dr Crokes ‘C’ 0-10 Milltown/Castlemaine ‘B’ 0-9

Venue: Lewis Road, Killarney

On a beautiful evening for football, Milltown/Castlemaine’s Juniors made the journey to Killarney to take on Dr Crokes.

In an end to end game, played in great sporting terms by both sides, it went right down to the wire with a late rally by Milltown/Castlemaine almost seeing us eke out what would have been a great result having been five points behind heading into the last quarter.

Both sides were level 0-2 to 0-2 at the first half water break. Dr Crokes kicked on in the second quarter and opened up a 0-7 to 0-3 lead at the half time interval as the home side were proving more efficient in front of the town end goal with Milltown/Castlemaine not lacking in chances but finding it hard to convert.

The second half exchanges remained nip and tuck and by the water break on the 45th minute, we trailed by 0-10 to 0-5. Despite a number of changes late on our lads finished strong and led by three fantastic points from midfielder Seamus O’Dowd and a beauty from Adam Lenihan from long range seen the bare minimum between the sides heading towards the closing stages.

Our lads battled hard to find the equalising score but unfortunately couldn’t dig it out and Dr Crokes ran out winners by the narrowest of margins after a very exciting game where our lads never gave in.

Hard luck to the players and management. It was great to see 24 players togged out this evening and the spirited nature of the performance was very pleasing, despite the narrow defeat. Plenty to take out of it and build on for future games!
