The old Tralee Town Council building will now house the Motor Tax Office.

THE Kerry Motor Tax Office is to move to a new location in Tralee on Monday next.

The new office will be in Prince’s Quay, formerly Tralee Town Council headquarters and across from the Brandon Hotel.

From Monday, December 8, all Motor Tax queries and transactions in Kerry will be carried out in the new office. Those looking to tax their vehicle online will still be able to do so at www.motortax.ie

In addition, those who choose to tax their vehicle by post will still have the same 48 hour turnaround, whereby they will receive their tax disc in the post two days after they posted it in.

“There are a number of reasons behind the move,” John Flynn, Director of Corporate Services with Kerry County Council explained.

“Firstly the numbers of people actually visiting the Motor Tax office in person to carry out their transactions are decreasing. This is due to an increase in people taxing their vehicles online, or via our 48 hour postal service. Additionally driver licences are no longer dealt with by the Motor Tax office, so this has had an impact as well.

“Secondly, the amalgamation of Tralee, Killarney and Listowel Town Councils has significantly changed the structure of Kerry County Council with four organizations now rolled into one. One of the main areas of change is in the Housing Department, which is now one of the busiest sections of Kerry County Council.

“We have over 4,000 local authority houses and are also dealing with other areas of housing support, and unfortunately, it is a part of Council business that is getting busier. There was a need to bring the Housing sections together and the old Motor Tax office in Rathass will serve that purpose well.”

The knock-on in changes will also allow for the Kerry Local Enterprise Office (LEO) to relocate within Áras an Chontae in Rathass, as part of the new Council structure.

A lot of work has been done behind the scenes in preparation for the move, including upgrades to the Prince’s Quay building, which has been carried out by the Council’s own staff.

“We’re looking forward to finally getting in there after many weeks of preparation,” Brenda Conway, who oversees the Motor Tax section, explained. “There’s plenty of parking next door in the Brandon Car park and anyone who isn’t in a position to call in, can post their motor tax form and will get their tax disc back within 48 hours.”
