ON Monday, Mercy Mounthawk u19 A Basketball team captured their second  south-west under 19 A boys title in three years.

They edged out local rivals CBS tralee on a score of 54 to 48. The game was played at a very high pace and standard and was close all the way with never more than 10 points separating the teams. Mounthawk looked like a team with a point to prove having lost the same final a year previous to CBS in another tight battle.

“We had a lot of injuries coming into this game and with only eight guys available to play, the team really dug deep and showed a great sense of desire and team spirit which I think one the game for them” said team manager, John Dowling.

The winning of the game came in the final four minutes of the last quarter, Mounthawk took over with some excellent shooting from Dara Devine and Karl Hoffman, anchored by brilliant defence which gave them the edge.

It was Mounthawk’s 4th final in a row and it showed in the dying minutes with some intelligent decision-making allowing them to close out the game and capture the title.

Mounthawk now move onto the All-Ireland quarter final on February 10 in the national basketball arena where they will battle it out for All-Ireland glory.

The team would like to wish Mike O’Donnell a speedy recovery from the injury which he suffered near the end of the 3rd quarter.
