Premier Junior Championship    Na Gaeil played Firies in the Premier Junior Championship Semi Final on Saturday evening in Castleisland in what were ideal conditions for football.

Na Gaeil opened the scoring with a good point from Eoin O’Neill but Firies Colm O’Shea quickly cancelled this out. Firies attacked again and Jack Sherwood cut through the Na Gaeil defence and planted the ball in the net.

But he played no further part in this game as he was black carded for a foul on Jack Barry in the 3rd minute. Firies were quick to respond and Padraig de Brún pointed for them again to put then 4 ahead.

Firies were dealt another severe blow two minutes later when their midfielder Shane O’Donoghue received a black card for a foul on Kieran Donovan. Darragh Carmody pointed a free for Na Gaeil but Donnacadh O’Sullivan replied with a point for Firies.

Diarmaid Herlihy fired over one on 22 minutes but Firies scored the next two through Pat Browne and Colm O’Shea.

Jack Barry and Mike Griffin pulled two back for Na Gaeil but Firies scored again on 30 minutes. Mike Griffin and Niall O’Donoghue exchanged points before the half time whistle to leave Firies ahead by 4 on a scorline of Na Gaeil: 0-06; Firies; 1-07.

Na Gaeil needed a good start to the 2nd half and that they did. Eoin O’Neill pointed on the re-start. Darragh Carmody pointed a free and Diarmaid Herlihy scored two from play to level matters after 8 minutes of play.

But Na Gaeil allowed Conal Murphy through for another Firies goal a minute later and were down by 3 again.

Seamie O’Neill responded with a point but Firies again burst through the Na Gaeil defence to score yet another goal this time from the boot of Doddacadh o’Sullivan to put them 6 points clear with 12 minutes gone in the half. Darragh Carmody pointed two frees for Na Gaeil but Firies pulled one back.

Jack Barry and Darragh Carmody pointed for Na Gaeil to leave 3 between the sides again with 7 minutes left to play. Firies scored again on 26 minutes.

Darragh Carmody pointed two frees to bring it back to two but Firies scored the next two points. Eoin O’Neill’s goal bound shot came off the crossbar before Darragh Carmody closed the scoring with a pointed free to leave the full time score Na Gaeil: 0-18; Firies: 3-12. 18 points would win most games but the concession of three goals proved costly for Na Gaeil on the day.

They will be disappointed with their display as they know they can play much better than this. But teams can have off days and this was just one of those days. They are division 3 champions and can look forward to playing in division two for the coming season.

They gave us great enjoyment over the year and well done to their dedicated management team of Donie Rooney, Richie Barrett, John Barry and Niall O’Meara. They did Trojan work with this team.

We congratulate Firies on their flawless performance despite losing two influential players early on in the game. They stuck to their task manfully and thoroughly deserved their win. We wish them all the best in the final.

U 12   Congratulations to the Na Gaeil U12 Boys who won the St. Brendan’s Board U12 blitz held at St. Pat’s Blennerville on Saturday last. The team was captained by Sean Barrett. Wins over Churchill, St. Pat’s and Ardfert in the round robin set up a final against St. Pat’s, with Na Gaeil. proving to be too strong for the home team. Many thanks to all the supporters who cheered our lads and to St. Pat’s for being generous hosts.

Na Gaeil U 12 boys who won the Saint Brendans Board Blitz held in Blennerville last Saturday

U 10  Last Sunday some of our under 10 boys, together with the club’s 11 year old players, took part in the Hughie Fitzmaurice Memorial U-11 tournament in Moyvane. We competed very well despite the awful weather conditions. We played 4 games in total, beating Beale & Fr. Caseys Abbeyfeale and losing out to Moyvane & Keel. For some of our lads it was their second blitz in 2 days so well done to everyone. Thank you to JJ Canty who looked after the team on the day and to Moyvane for inviting us to take part.
We won’t continue to have training on Thursday evenings but hopefully we’ll see you all in Killeen next Sunday as we host Kerins O’Rahillys u-10s in a challenge game. Please remember that its essential that every player wears their mouth guard at all training sessions and games.

Na Gaeil Ladies  -v-  John Mitchels, Tralee Town League Div 1.

We played at home on Monday evening against John Mitchels, We got off to a flying start with a great goal by Emma Savage. We followed this with more scores from Sarah and Freya.

Another goal from Caoilinn after a pass from Jessica. In defence we were very tight for the 1st half with Kelsey, Wiktoria, Cara and Emma Dewey being on top of their forwards. We were well in top with more points from Muire , Kayleigh Costello and Ciara. Mitchels had a great start to the 2nd half scoring a quick 2 goals to get them back in the game. They were holding possession well as we were struggling against a resurgent team.

Mitchels scored another few points before Eimer and Kayleigh Murphy gained control of the backs and we pushed on again as Megan and Winnie started to gain control again. Aoife and Ailbhe went close with scores in the forwards before Sarah, Freya and Muire got the scores we needed to finish out the game with a good win.

Na Gaeil Ladies v Ballymac, Tralee Town League Div 1
We played away on Wednesday evening, the field was wet and heavy as we struggled with the conditions.

The first 15 mins was scoreless as both teams defended well with Megan, Kayleigh Murphy and Wiktoria staying tight on their players. Ailbhe got the 1st point of the game and was very close to follow up with a 2nd which grazed the crossbar. Emma Savage had the ball in the back of the net but was harshly disallowed. Against the run of play, we conceded a goal from a long distance kick. Ballymac followed this up quickly with another goal.

Just as half time was approaching, Ballymac took a free which Winnie saved, hit the crossbar and came out, it got shot back in, rebounded back off the upright and Ballymac scored a goal from it. This got our heads down a bit. Ballymac defended well for the start of the 2nd half and manages to score 1.02 as we were pushing forward trying to get ourselves back into the game.

Eimer, Emma Dewey and Kelsey started to win their individual battles on the half back line with Megan, Aoife, Kayleigh Murphy and Wiktoria not letting any Ballymac player sight of our goals. Sarah scored a goal from a free kick and quickly followed this up with another goal after great work from Winnie, Sarah, Freya and Eimer were pushing forward as we started to believe that we could win.

Muire, Ciara, Kayleigh Costello all had chances but on a night, we just had no luck ,we hit the crossbar on a couple of occasions along another couple of decisions going against us. But it was a great finish to the game. We have our North Kerry Final v Castleisland on Monday evening.
