U14    The Na Gaeil U14 team were back in action last Saturday for the 2017 St Brendan’s Board championship. They played Churchill in the morning and won the match by six points after a tough battle. Their reward was a place in the final against Ardfert on Saturday afternoon.

Na Gaeil U14 Team Winners of tue St Brendan’s Board Championship at the weekend

We had played Ardfert twice already this season but were beaten on both occasions. However, Na Gaeil were determined to change the trend and finish the season with a victory. It turned out to be third time lucky with Na Gaeil winning by 3-10 to 2-8.

This result was due to a huge effort and commitment from the entire team. Every player on the panel gave 100% on the day, starting from goalie Aaron Delahunty whose kick outs were excellent and provided an attacking platform all day. The backs defended as a unit and made sure any score by Ardfert or Churchill was hard earned.

Our midfielders worked tirelessly dropping back to help the defence when needed and then providing excellent ball into our forwards. The forwards made excellent use of that supply and got some excellent scores over the two games.

This was a great end to the season for this team. They started training in early February and showed total commitment during the entire season.

The hard work paid off as they won a County League title and Kerry Féile in May, played in the National Féile finals in June and reached the Tralee Town Board final last month.

In addition, a number of the team have also played for St Brendan’s in the county championship and four of the team played for the Kerry development team during the summer. We must also thank all the supporters who have followed the team throughout the season and this support was vital on numerous occasions.

The under 13 members of the team have one more competition to look forward to. They are playing Ardfert this Sunday in the semi-final of the Town Board championship.

They also have had a very successful 2017 season winning the Town Board League and Lee Strand Tournament last month.   l

U10      Last Sunday our U10 boys hosted Kerins O’Rahillys while our U9s hosted St Pats. The U10s put in a very gutsy performance to just about get the better of Rahillys. Well done to all our players and thanks to Dylan Seymour for refereeing for us at very short notice. Next Sunday we’re due to host Keel so watch out for a text during the week with all the details. Don’t forget to bring your mouth guard & a bottle of water.

U8     This Sunday will mark the end of what has been an amazing season for our under 8 boys. We play Keel in Na Gaeil at 11am. Please meet at 10.45am sharp for team selection.

U 6     Under glorious sunshine the under 6 players got stuck in last Sunday and gave the innocent bystanders a good run for their money in a very exciting game of dodge ball. Two matches followed  where there was plenty of scores and even two penalties awarded. Next Sunday sees us at home to Keel. Please meet at 10.45 am in Na Gaeil.

Na Gaeil Ladies    U14 Division 2 Shield Final V Castleisland Desmonds :  We started well with our defenders really being on top protecting Winnie in goals. Megan, Kayleigh Murphy and Wiktoria held tight together and won every ball that came their way with wing backs Cara Grealish and Kelsey making it hard for Desmonds to come down the wings and with Eimer in the centre winning every loose ball, setting up attacks and allowing Sarah and Freya to get forward at every chance. Emma Dewey got our 1st score with a well taken goal with a 1st time shot from the ground.

Na Gaeil Ladies U14 North Kerry Division 2 Shield Winners

We followed this with points from Sarah, Freya, Muire and Emma. Sarah got another goal just before half time to leave us with a commanding lead with Desmonds scoring 3 points in the 1st half. Desmonds came out in the 2nd half really fired up and managed to score 3 quick points with the aid of the wind. Adelina, Ailbhe and Grace came into the backs to give some of our defenders a rest as we kicked on again with Cara Gannon and Caoilinn to come into the forwards.

Na Gaeil u14 Captains Muire Kingston and Eimer O Sullivan

Jessica set up Ciara for a point to settle us but with 10 minutes to go Castleisland scored a fortunate goal. but we settled quickly and with points from Ciara, Freya and Eimer, we controlled the game to the end to win on a scoreline of 2.09 to 1.06. It was a well deserved victory for all the hard work that the girls have put in all year.

Team: Winnie Burke, Megan Fernane, Kayleigh Murphy, Kelsey O’Mahony, Emma Dewey, Eimer O’Sullivan, Cara Grealish, Sarah Barrett, Freya O’Connor, Muire Kingston, Wiktoria Kania, Ciara Rath, Caoilinn O’Brien, Jessica Harrington, Siena Lucey, Aoife Barrett, Adelina Kastrati, Emma Savage, Grace Savage, Kayleigh Costello, Ailbhe Daly, Elizabeth Burke, Cara Gannon.

Na Gaeil v John Mitchels, Tralee Town League Ladies U12 Div 1 Shield Final

Na Gaeil Ladies U12 Team Winners of the Town League Division Shield

We played Mitchels in Connolly Park in the last U12 game of the season. We had played twice this year with both teams winning one game each. Siun got us off to the perfect start with a great point after some fine work from Roisin. Mitchels scored a point to match us.

Maja and Grace had their work cut out for them as they had to mark Mitchels very effective wing forwards but managed to keep them quiet.

Our full back line of Elsie Peig, Shania and Niamh were outstanding. They held their ground and left Mitchels have no sight of goals for the whole match, letting in all long shots that Elizabeth in goals was able to manage. Aoife in the centre back position left no player run through the centre so kept Mitchels to long range kicks.

Na Gaeil U12 Captains Aisling Casey & Niamh Ryan with theTown League Division 1 Plaque

Caoilinn was causing all kinds of trouble as she was being marked tight but still managed to pick off a point and set up Sorcha for a point. Ava scored a point before Chloe had the ball in the back of the net but was it was adjudged to be a foul.

Aisling scored a goal from a free that Priya won for us. Cara followed this on with another point. But Mitchels still came back at us scoring long range points and a couple of free kicks. Jessie, Katie, Aoife and Priya came into the team to give some of our tiring legs a rest.

Eve won us a free kick that Aisling popped over the bar before Sorcha teamed up with Haley to score another point. Caoimhe came into the forwards to keep the pressure on and we had a 3 point lead with 2 minutes to go.

Mitchels won a free kick and managed to find the top corner to leave us all level as we were heading into injury time. Aoife Barrett won the kick out and found Sorcha who got a bad knock to the ground. But Sorcha got up and fought on.

Aisling took the free kick but it was tapped behind for a 45′. Aisling again took the 45′ which Sorcha won and was fouled again, 15yrds from goal. Cara Gannon stood up and popped the free over the bar to defeat Mitchels by 1 point. It was a great performance as we were missing Siena through injury and we can be proud of each player as they gave it their best effort at every game and training session that they played in all year.

Well done to all and a big thanks to all the parents who travelled and supported us all through the year. And a special thanks to Deirdre, Susan and Meagan for their coaching and mentoring. The most important thing is for the girls to be enjoying it, making friends and improving their skills.

Team: Niamh Ryan, Ava Rice, Roisin O’Mahony, Elsie Peig Rogers, Aoife Barrett, Aisling Casey, Cara Gannon, Sorcha Casey, Caoilinn O’Brien, Siena Lucey, Aoife Hartnett, Chloe Quillinan, Grace Savage, Elizabeth Burke, Caoimhe Fernane, Jessie Grealish, Eve Broderick, Shania McCarthy, Siun Fitzgibbon, Maja Cieslak, Katie Casey, Haley Buckley, Priya O’Donovan.

Best of luck to our Mná Na Gaeil team who are heading to Portmarnock this weekend for the Annual Mothers and Others Blitz.

U16 Ladies     Our season is gradually coming to a close, with just a couple of games to play out.  We played our last round game of the North Kerry U16 league away to Castleisland last Friday evening.

Unfortunately, just before halftime there was a clash between two of the players and the Castleisland player appeared to damage her neck in the fall.  In the interest of safety an ambulance was called and with the fading light the match was postponed.

We have heard since that Tara had a slight tissue tear and will be fine – we wish her a speedy recovery.  I hope our girls can put in a performance for the rematch like they did in the original game as they were playing some of the best football we have seen them play all year.

Aine in goals along with the fullback line had a relatively quiet evening and dealt with everything that came their way, conceding only one point.

The Na Gaeil girls were dominating the attacks and a lot of this was down to the tireless work by Freya, Sarah and Eimer in the halfbacks as they brought the ball forward time and again setting up the plays, when not taking scores themselves with Sarah putting over three lovely points.

Clodagh and Mary worked well off each other in mid field and seemed to control the pace of the game.  Ciara, Dearbhla and Muire seemed to have a secret language amongst themselves as they had some lovely smooth passing movements.

Again when they weren’t taking the scores they were setting up Caragh and Brid inside at full forward.  Well done to Captain Clodagh and the girls on playing such a sweet game of football to watch.

Let’s hope they can pick up where they left off.  We received a walk over from Ballymac in the Town League so have Mitchells to play.  The winners play Stacks in the final.
