Seniors    Na Gaeil senior team travelled to Milltown on Saturday evening to take on Milltown/Castlemaine in round 4 of the County League. Dara Devine opened the scoring for Na Gaeil with a pointed free after three minutes.

The home team scored the next two points. Dara Devine pointed his 2ndfree on eleven minutes. He then kicked a 45 to Dan O’Connor who fired it over the bar. Milltown breached the Na Gaeil defence after fifteen minutes and scored a goal and a point in quick succession.

But Na Gaeil hit back immediately and scored the last four points of the half with Dara Devine pointing three frees and Jamie Lowham and scoring one from play. Half time score: Na Gaeil: 0-08; Milltown/Castlemaine: 1-04.

Dara Devine continued where he left off, putting over three frees early in the 2ndhalf. These were followed by points from Ian McCarthy and Diarmuid O’Connor. Heading into the final quarter Milltown/Castlemaine scored two points to reduce the deficit but Dara Devine put over another free to settle Na Gaeil down again.

The home side were not going to give up easily and hit back with two further points. Diarmuid O’Connor had the last point of the half ensuring that Na Gaeil were the victors winning by two points in the end. Final score: Na Gaeil: 0-15; Milltown/Castlemaine: 1-10.

Na Gaeil will be delighted to have another two points gained in this very competitive division. Dara Devine was unerring from frees. It was Niall O’Mahony’s first start in the league and what a game he had in defence being the epitomy of soundness in the full back line.

He was ably assisted by Kieran Dineen and Eoin O’Neill and Eoin Doody. Stefan Okunbor and Dan O’ Connor won the midfield battle and up front Diarmuid O’ Connor Dara Devine and Ian McCarthy were very effective.

Team: Timmy Culloty, Niall O’Mahony, Kieran Dineen, Ryan O’Neill, Eoin O’Neill, Eoin Doody, Kieran O’Donovan, Stefan Okunbor, Dan O’Connor, Ian McCarthy, Diarmuid O’Connor, Andrew Barry, Diarmaid Herlihy, Jamie Lowham, Dara Devine. We had a hard earned victory against Rathmore in the semi final on Friday evening last on a very wet pitch away. Final Score 1-7 to 2-10. We played against the wind against a fancied Rathmore team in the first half and went to the dressing rooms trailing by a single point 1-3 to 1-2 at the break.

It was a fantastic game for the neutral played by two sporting teams but we edged ahead in the second half with all players digging deep and playing fantastically well as a unit.

Na Gaeil Ladies    We played Corca Dhuibhne in Killeen on Thursday night in the North Kerry U12 Plate Final. Conditions were ideal and we got off to a good start with Siun and Grainne exchanging points. Aoife Hartnett was unlucky not to squeeze in a goal after some great work from Aisling and Jessie. Corca Dhuibhne scored 2.02 against the run of play. Sorcha scored another point before half time but it was Katie who was our saviour as she made two great saves to keep us in the game. We composed ourselves at half-time and Grainne got us going with a goal followed quickly with another goal from Sorcha after Chloe and Eve made a great turn-over. Aoife Barrett made a run up the field after Priya and Maya won the ball on our halfback line. Corca replied back with a goal but it was their last score of the game as defenders Elsie Peig, Grace, Roisin Cantwell, Caoimhe and Aoife Moynihan held tough in defence and with Aoife Barrett , Siun and Roisin O Mahony in front of them, we were able to keep them at bay. Ava McGough came into the forwards and immediately set up Grainne for another goal. We got more points from Sorcha, Siun, Roisin O’Mahony and Grainne with a huge amount of team play from Ava Rice, Eve, Cliona and Sarah Slattery. Final score in the game was 3.11 to 3.02. It was a great display of teamwork and they deserved it for the work that they have put in into training. Well done Girls.

We travelled to South Kerry on Sunday to play ISG in Dromore Sportsfield in the Senior Ladied Division 1 game. We struggled to get into the game after the one and half hour drive to get there. But two points from Meagan settled us. Clodagh McHugh and Sibéal combined well to play Jadyn for two more points. ISG came back at us, scoring a quick 2.01 before Meabh teed up Sarah for two points before halftime. We made a few changes at half time with Meagan going into the full forward line which paid off immediately with Meagan scoring 1.03 within the first seven minutes of the 2nd half. ISG scored a point but that was their last score of the game as Caragh, Susan and Clodagh O’Connor protected Laura in goals. Deirdre, Freya and Kate Anne cut out the supply line to their forwards and with Nora and Mary in midfield setting up our forwards for more scores with Sibéal scoring a fine point. Muire and Clodagh were unlucky not to score as well. Meagan finished off the game with two more points as we won 1.11 to 2.02. Well done to our players as we have finished the League with one loss and been top of Div 1 since the start of the League. We can now look forward to the semi final with a home tie.

U16 Ladies    We have had a quiet couple of weeks as there were no matches due to Kerry’s participation in the U16 Munster Final v Tipperary. Mary O’Connell represented Na Gaeil lining out in midfield. A big well done to all the girls on their victory and all the best to them in the All Ireland series where they will play the winners of the Leinster Final. We had no game last week as Milltown were unable to field a team and asked to move the game.  As a result we have a home game v Milltown on Tuesday with a fast turn around for an away visit to Fossa on Thursday.  This is a very tight division with a number of clubs, including ourselves, battling for pole position.  Hopefully the girls will continue playing as well as they have been as these are the kind of games that bring on players. Na Gaeil Abú!
