Na Gaeil Notes Monday August 20th 2018

Seniors    Sunday was a historic day for the club with the senior team being promoted to Division 1 of the Senior County League for the first time in its forty year history by virtue of a draw against Glenflesk in the last game of the County League played in Glenflesk. Played in ideal conditions this was a close encounter all through with no more than two points separating the sides at any one time. Jack Barry winning the throw in scored the first point. But Glenflesk replied with the next three scores with two Jeff O’Donoghue frees and a point from Padraig Healy.  Ian McCarthy pointed for Na Gaeil and Dara Devine fired over three more. Jeff and Brian O’Donoghue were impressive for Glenflesk scoring two each before Jack Barry scored two more for Na Gaeil. Ian McCarthy and Diarmaid Herlihy chipped in with a point each and Timmy Culloty made a point blank save on the 20 minute mark to deny Glenflesk a certain goal. Jeff and Brian O’Donoghue scored the last two points of the half to leave the score at the interval: Na Gaeil: 0-09; Glenflesk: 0-10.

Ian McCarthy and Lee O’Donoghue exchanged points after half time. Seamie O’Neill, Jamie Lowham and Jack Barry scored again for Na Gaeil to put them two ahead but Glenflesk’s Lee O’Donoghue scored two good points.  Jamie Lowham pulled a point back for Na Gaeil but Sean Doherty and Jeff O’Donoghue again scored for Glenflesk.  Johnathan Bowler and Ian McCarthy swopped points and Dara Devine put two more points on the board. Glenflesk’s Donal O’Sullivan scored two good points to leave the sides level with 26 minutes of the half gone. Eoin O’Neill put Na Gaeil ahead on 28 minutes but Glenflesk’s Sean Doherty levelled the game a minute later. Final score: Na Gaeil: 0-19; Glenflesk: 0-19.

U16    Division 1 Co League Final: Na Gaeil: 1-1; Dr Crokes 0-10. Na Gaeil U 16 team made history in Austin Stacks park on Wednesday evening last winning the County League title for the first time in the Club’s history. In a keenly contested final we performed heroically thanks to some fantastic performances but more importantly as was the case all year due to a fantastic team performance.

The supporters were treated to a great game of football and when Na Gaeil went in two points up at half time on a scoreline of 0-6 to 0-4. It looked like we would dominate the second half as we were going to have a strong breeze favouring us and the momentum with us. Crokes really put it up to us and it took us a while to settle but we eventually ran out four point winners. We all breathed a sigh of relief when Cian Devine got the insurance point with his now customary fist over the crossbar in the 5th minute of extra time! .Devon Burns gave a man of the match performance in goals pulling off three great saves and converting two 45s.

The full back line of Liam Óg Kingston, Oisin Mauncell and Jimi O Súilleabháin. The half back line of Enda O’Connor Basit Oyebanji and Tom Walsh ensured that we didn’t concede any goals and worked hard as a unit to turn over many of the Dr. Crokes attacks. Tomas O hAiniféin and Mikey Clifford were outstanding in the middle of the Park. The half forward line of Tadhg Reen, Jack Sheehan and John O’Connor linked seamlessly with the full forward line of Jack Bourke, Matthew Burke and Cian Devine to ensure that the score board ticked over. Our substitutes Breandan Walsh, Peter Walsh, Graham Sheehy and Jamie Fitzgerald all contributed to a famous victory. Thanks to the rest of the panel for getting us to the Final namely, Shane Daly, Scott Ryan, Denis Moriarty, Joshua Roche ,Daniel Henrikson and Jonathan Mc Carthy. Thanks to the Management Liam Kingston, Tom Rooney, James Prendergast and Tim Lynch for their hard work and dedication during the year. We hope all the panel enjoy their success and realize the importance of this fantastic achievement and continue to play for Na Gaeil well into the future bring further success to the Club.
