NA GAEIL U16:Na Gaeil and Firies faced each other in the final of Div. 1 of the County League in Ballymacelligott on Wednesday night last. A strongly fancied Firies side were off to an explosive start with a goal and two points from play in the first five minutes and were dominating until Na Gaeil settled after ten minutes and started coming into the game.

A point from Patrick Roche registered Na Gaeil’s first point after twelve minutes. Firies replied with another point by Liam Brosnan when he won the battle for the kick out.

Niall O’Mahony pulled one back in the fourteenth minute from a pass from Declan Horgan. Firies scored a point from a free in the twentieth minute but at this stage both teams were matching each other in ability.

Niall O’Mahony was having a great game around the middle of the field, was getting back to defend and was also involved in attacking movements. Diarmuid O’Connor had a great run at the Firies defence with ten minutes left in this half but continued play saw the ball go marginally wide of the Firies goal.

Firies opened up a sizeable lead in the twenty fourth minute when they drove the ball to the Na Gaeil net. A good move by Na Gaeil in the twenty eight minute saw Dan Goggin stick the ball over the bar from play that started on Shawn Duggan’s goal line and went through Damien Bourke, Fergal Barry, Niall O’Mahony Dara Devin and Diarmuid O’Connor. A final minute point by Firies left a half time score of Na Gaeil 0-04, Firies 2-05.
Although Na Gaeil were first to score from a Dara Devine free in this half, it was Firies who were off to another explosive start. Three goals in as many minutes show why they are unbeaten all year.

Na Gaeil were left chasing the game with a fifteen point deficit but were undeterred by the score line and battled on. Dylan Burns pointed from play in the sixth minute from a good ball from Dan Goggin.

Firies added two more points to their tally and Dylan Burns narrowed the margin when he ran into the square to palm a crossing ball into the Firies net. Firies added two more points, one from a free, and Diarmuid O’Connor pointed a free for Na Gaeil.

Firies were always looking strong but Na Gaeil were creating good scoring chances with Niall O’Mahony and Dylan Burns dropping some good ball into attacking forwards.

In the twenty fourth minute Diarmuid O’Connor showed his class when he broke through about five defenders and side stepping them drove the ball to the top right corner of the net in a move that left us all in awe.

Na Gaeil piled on the pressure in the final minutes of the game and were awarded two penalties for their efforts. The Firies goalie saved the first and the resultant clearance out of defence earned them a point at the other end of the field. Another penalty in the dying moments of the game saw Diarmuid O’Connor drive the ball past the keeper to raise the green flag.

Final score Na Gaeil 3-07(16), Firies 5-10(25). The better team won on the night but what a spirited display by Na Gaeil. Well done lads, you did yourselves and the club proud to reach a division 1 final. Well done to Mike Burns, Liam Goggin and Darren Burns and thanks to all of you who came along to cheer and support the team all year.

ROSE CUP: The annual Rose Cup took place on Saturday last and again Na Gaeil hosted 8 teams. Firstly the supports from team mentors and parents setting up the pitches and providing refreshments for the day was excellent.

Our first game was against Kilcummin and we won the game pulling up with Cian Devine scoring 2 crucial goals. Next was St. Sennans which was a tighter affair but the difference was a Jimmy O Sullivan goal right after half time.

Our final group game was V Dingle and our lads just couldn’t get going until the final 7 minutes when we opened up a 5 point lead for us to qualify for the semi final of the cup. All squad players played in all these group games.

The semi final against An Ghaeltacht was a real competitive game of football but we had a good spread of quality throughout the pitch and finally came through by 3 points at the end. Up to Ballyrickard so for the final to play Legion and Na Gaeil owned the football in the first half but failed to put up a commanding lead at half time (0-03 to 0-01).

Right from the off in the second half Legion upped their workload to no end and we just found it very difficult to get the ball out of our own half. With time nearly up the sides were level at four points each and Legion won a final free in injury time out the wing and scored a great point to win the Rose cup.

Heartbroken as they were our lads played some great football and credit to everyone in the club for preparing these lads to play the way they did all day.
