Seniors    Na Gaeil played Firies in the first round of the Premier Junior Championship in Austin Stack Park on Sunday afternoon in what were perfect conditions for football.

Na Gaeil played with the wind at their backs in the opening half. Unfortunately Na Gaeil’s No. 7 Eoin Walsh fell awkwardly while going for the ball and dislocated his shoulder after just one minute of play and had to leave the field.

He was replaced by Eoin Doody. Ian McCarthy put Na Gaeil on the scoreboard after three minutes with a fine point.

In the fifth minute Dara Devine was at the end of a slick passing movement to skilfully crash the ball to the corner of the opposition net, a move started in the half back line where Damien Bourke turned over a Firies ball.

Diarmaid Herlihy and Eoin O’Neill fired over two more points for Na Gaeil before Firies registered their first score, a pointed free from their no. 10 William Courtney after twenty minutes.

This score got Firies going and they scored the next two points through Donnacadh O’Sullivan and Mike Daly to make it a three point game after twenty three minutes of play.

But Na Gaeil settled again with Jamie Lowham, Mike Griffin and Diarmuid O’Connor all scoring from play. Firies No. 13 pointed a 30 metre free before referee Mike Hennessy blew the half time whistle. Score at the interval: Na Gaeil 1-06; Firies: 0-04.

Na Gaeil won the throw in at the start of the 2nd half and midfielder Diarmuid O’Connor raced through the Firies defence to score a peach of a point. Firies won the resultant kick out and went on the attack. Their no. 10 William Courtney raced in on goal. His point plank shot seemed destined to hit the back of the Na Gaeil net but goal keeper Timmy Culloty brought of a magnificent save to deny Firies a green flag.

The first of two great stops from the Na Gaeil net minder. William Courtney put over the resultant 45 for Firies. Na Gaeil now upped the ante and through some great interplay and team work scored the next four points on the trot through Jack Barry, Diarmaid Herlihy, Diarmuid O’Connor and Mike Griffin to go nine ahead on the 40 minute mark.

Firies pulled one back with a pointed free from Donnacadh O’Sullivan. This was to be their last score of the half as their forwards were getting no change from the rock solid Na Gaeil defence. Our midfield of Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor were also on top soouer forwards were getting a plentiful supply of ball.  with Dara Devine pointed two frees and one from play.

Mike Griffin scored a point and Diarmaid Herlihy chipped in with two more before referee Mike Hennessy blew for full time. Final score: Na Gaeil: 1- 17; Firies: 0-06. Na Gaeil will be happy with the display of their whole team and the subs introduced but know that they cannot rest on their laurels. They play Skellig Rangers in round two at home next weekend in what should be another tough encounter.

Speedy Recovery    Everybody in the club wishes Eoin Walsh a speedy recovery  after he sustained a shoulder injury in the game versus Firies on Sunday and hope that he will be back playing with the senior team in the not too distant future.

Minors    In the Division 1 County League Na Gaeil minors defeated Austin Stacks on Wednesday evening on a scoreline of 3-10 to 1-07. On Friday night they defeated Dr. Crokes by three points, 14 points to 11. They play Rathmore at home on Tuesday evening April 9th at 6.45pm. They are now into the league semi final.

Na Gaeil Ladies    We played Castleisland at home on Sunday morning in Killeen in the 2nd round of the Mary Jo Curran Cup. Meabh got us going with a point from a 30 yard free. Castleisland did equalise with a point but we replied quickly with a goal from Maria after a great pass from Meabh.

Mary won the kickout and bore down on goals and scored the 2nd goal. Nora won the ball in midfield and laid it off to Maria who again found the back of the net. Our defence of Mags, Brid, Blaithnaid, Muireann, Sarah Quigley and Kateanne didn’t let Castleisland score anymore in the 1st half. With points from Meagan, Clodagh and Carla, we finished the 1st half off strongly.

Castleisland made a rally for the start of the 2nd half scoring a goal and a point and then winning a penalty which Kate Anne was very unlucky not to save. But we settled down quickly with Freya, Sarah Barrett and Emma coming in and steadying the ship.

Erika set up Meabh for another point before Carla played in Meagan for a point. Another great run forward from Brid set up Meagan for a clear run on goal and she made no mistake finding the back of the net. Eimer and Muire came on and injected energy into the team as Maria scored another point from a tight angle before Emma found Meagan again and she popped it over the bar for the last score of the game.

Team: Sarah Quigley, Mary O‘Connell, Brid O’Connor, Nora O’Connell, Meagan Sheehy, Meabh Barry, Kate Anne O’Connor, Maria Quirke,  Megan O’Connor ,Clodagh McHugh, Erika O’Sullivan, Emma O’Keeffe, Marguerite Maunsell, Muireann Moriarty,  Caragh O ‘Neill, Freya O’Connor, Sarah Barrett, Carla Hanafin, Muire Kingston, Blaithnaid O’Connor, Eimer O’Sullivan,

We played away to a very strong Laune Rangers team on Sunday evening in the U14 Division 3 County League.

We got off to a good start with Chloe scoring the 1st point of the game. Grainne fed Siena with the ball and she promptly put it over the bar. Rangers replied with a flurry of points before Siun scored a point.

Rangers started take control for about 10 minutes putting pressure on our defence with Rangers getting three quick goals but with half time looming, Aisling , Cara and Siun got the ball forward and we put the pressure on scoring two goals through Siena and Chloe just before halftime.

Rangers took control at the start of the 2nd half and scored 2.04. It took us a while to getting going but we started to get ourselves back into the game with a point from Siun after Eve played a superb pass.

Grace, Aoife and Elsie Peig were standing strong with Priya and Captain Elizabeth Slattery in super form.

We kept putting the pressure on Rangers but they had a great keeper in goals as she made save after save before Roisin made a run and laid the ball off to Caoilinn to find the back of the net. Aisling won the kickout and played in Siena for another goal but alas we ran out of time and luck. But the girls showed great fighting spirit throughout the game.

Team: Elizabeth Burke, Grace Savage, Aoife Barrett, Elsie Peig Rogers, Elizabeth Slattery, Aisling Casey, Priya O’Donovan, Siun Fitzgibbon, Cara Gannon, Siena Lucey, Caoilinn O Brien, Roisin O ‘Mahony, Eve Broderick, Grainne Breen, Cashla Mullen, Chloe Quillinan, Sorcha Casey, Niamh Ryan, Roisin O’Mahony, Shania McCarthy

We played Corca Dhuibhne in Lispole on Thursday night in the Ladies Division 2 County League in mixed weather conditions. But it did not deter the girls from a great display of football. With goals coming from Siun and Caoilinn early in the game, we set the tone for how the game was going to play.

More scores from Ciara, Muire and a goal from Siena kept us on top. Meagn, Eimer , Sarah, Cara and U16 debutant Aisling were superb in defence as time and time again they stopped Corca Dhuibhne runs through and when Aoife was needed, she stood strong and had great kickouts. Freya worked tirelessly and she covered nearly every blade of grass on the pitch. Emma scored another point to put us in the driving seat as we held on for a good win

Team:  Aoife Barrett, Aisling Casey, Megan Fernane, Eimer O’Sullivan, Siun Fitzgibbon, Cara Grealish, Emma Dewey, Sarah Barrett, Freya O’Connor, Siena Lucey, Ciara Rath, Caoilinn O’Brien, Muire Kingston.
