Seniors    Skellig Rangers made the long trip to Killeen on Saturday evening to take on Na Gaeil in round 2 of the Premier Junior Championship. In wet and windy conditions Na Gaeil played with the aid of the breeze in the first half and their no. 10 Ian McCarthy slotted over a 20 metre free after two minutes.

Na Gaeil’s Jamie Lowham pointed from play on ten minutes. Na Gaeil won the kickout and after some good interplay Jack Barry passed to James O’Connor who found the back of the Skellig net from just outside the square.

On the quarter hour mark Skellig Rangers no. 11 Darragh O’Sullivan pointed a good free against the wind to get them off the mark. Ian McCarthy responded with another pointed free for Na Gaeil before Skellig’s Diarmuid Keating scored their first point from play.

The impressive Ian McCarthy again fired over the bar and this was followed by further Na Gaeil points from Diarmaid Herlihy and Dan O’Connor before referee Jim O’Connor blew the short whistle. Half time score: Na Gaeil: 1-06; Skellig Rangers: 0-02.

Na Gaeil again started the 2nd half brightly with substitutes Diarmuid O’Connor and Dara Devine raising white flags. Skellig’s Darragh O’Sullivan pointed another free on 37 minutes but their forwards were finding it difficult to breach the Na Gaeil defence where Andrew Barry was a commanding figure at no. 6. Eight minutes into the half Andrew Barry won a good ball out on the wing and worked it in to James O’Connor.

He off loaded it to Dara Devine who kicked it into the back of the Skellig net. It was always going to be an up-hill struggle for the South Kerry boys after conceding this score. Dan Goggin and Kieran Donovan added to Na Gaeil’s tally before Skellig’s Darragh O’Sullivan fired over another free.

Heading into the last quarter there were further Na Gaeil points from Dan O’Connor, Dan Goggin and Fergal Barry. Skellig Rangers Danny O’Sullivan and Darragh O’Sullivan had each a point from placed balls before Jack Barry fired over the last point of the game.
