Seniors    Na Gaeil played Spa, Killarney in Round 6 of the Senior County League in Killeen on Sunday in damp misty conditions.

Spa’s wing back Ciaran Spillane opened the scoring after two minutes with a point and this was cancelled out with a point from Na Gaeil’s Jamie Lowham at the other end. Spa’s Cormac Cronin crashed home a goal from close range 16 minutes in followed by a point from their no. 6 Dan O’Donoghue.

Na Gaeil battled hard and Dara Devine pointed a free on 20 minutes. Na Gaeil had the lion’s share of possession at this stage and on 23 minutes a shot from Jamie Lowham was fumbled by the Spa keeper and ended up in the net.

Spa’s Michael O’Donoghue pointed a free for the Killarney side and then at the other end Ian McCarthy sent a low hard shot to the left hand corner of the Spa net with 4 minutes left to half time to put us two ahead. Jamie Lowham and Michael O’Donoghue traded points before referee Stephen Mulvihill blew the half time whistle. Score at the break: Na Gaeil: 2-03; Spa: 1-04.

Dara Devine and Spa’s Michael O’Donoghue exchanged points early in the 2nd half before Spa’s Niall McCarthy sneaked in for a goal. Dara Devine responded with a pointed free for Na Gaeil to level the match again with 15 minutes gone.

Mike McCarthy pointed for Spa followed by two good points from Dara Devine, one from a free. With 20 minutes gone Spa’s Shane Cronin got inside the Na Gaeil defence for another goal followed by a point from their no. 12 Niall McCarthy.

But Na Na Gaeil showed great heart all through this game and responded in great fashion. The ball was delivered to Ian McCarthy who made an incisive run through the middle to set up Dara Devine for a great goal and level up matters again with 4 minutes of normal time left to play.

But Spa won the resultant kick out and worked the ball down the field for another goal scored this time by their full forward Michael Foley.

They scored a point through Shane Cronin before Mike Griffin slotted over for Na Gaeil and Dara Devine had the last say with a pointed free to leave the full time score: Na Gaeil 3-08; Spa : 4-08.

This was a game Na Gaeil were unlucky not to get something out of but must be heartened by their gutsy display where every player gave  their utmost on the day. Na Gaeil now travel to Caherciveen in two weeks time to take on St. Mary’s.

Na Gaeil Girls U14 Division 3 County League Champions after defeating Beaufort in the final in Páirc Eamon, Firies on Sunday.

Na Gaeil Ladies    After a hard fought campaign, we played Beaufort in the Div 3 U14 County League Final on Sunday evening in Firies GAA pitch. Both sides gave away very little chances in the first 10 minutes as both sides remained scoreless.

With Grainne Quirke and Aisling being strong through the centre of our defence, we were hard to break down. Cara intercepted a ball being played into the Beaufort forwards and found Róisín. Roisin played in Eve who finished with her usual coolness to find the back of the net. Beaufort replied with a point from a free.

But again we replied quickly with two points from Caoilinn. Beaufort scored another two points from free kicks.

But just as Beaufort thought that they were getting themselves back into the game, Grainne Breen won the kick out, found Cara who quickly played in Caoilinn for a goal. From the resulting kick out, Eve won the ball and found Siena in space and she scored her 1st goal of the game.

As halftime approached Beaufort made a rally back as they scored a quick 1.03 but Siena finished off the half with a point from a free. Halftime score 3.03 to 1.05. We were in for a tough 2nd half as Beaufort had the wind and the hill.

Beaufort came out of the blocks on fire for the 2nd  half and scored 3 quick points. But we battled back with Cara and Róisín starting to take control of midfield. With towering performances from the half back line of Ciara Lynch, Aisling Casey and Elizabeth Slattery who were winning our kick outs, setting up attacks and along with Beaufort struggling to get through them.

But the few times they did, they came up against the wall of Grace, Grainne Quirke and Priya and with Elsie Peig coming on with fresh legs to make some important interceptions as they made sure Beaufort scored no more than 3 points in the 2nd half.

And with keeper Aoife Barrett in goals, we were in safe hands, as she held any long range shots and set up many attacks with her kick outs. Beaufort couldn’t get through us and we punished them on the other side with Grainne setting up Siena for her 2nd goal, Sorcha now came into side and made an impact finding Cashla in space who beat the keeper.

Our midfielders were pushing up and Beaufort struggled to win their kick outs. Siena completed her hat trick after Ciara, Cara and Róisín combined to play her in. With the final whistle looming, Captains Aisling and Cara drove forward and found Siun who skipped around three players and hammered the ball into the back of the net.

Before the game, we said that the final would be won on team play and with a final score of 8.03 to 1.08, it was the team play, hard work and support for each other that won it for them. Well deserved for all the hard work that they put in to make the final. A huge thanks also must go to the huge support that we had at the game as well. Well done to everyone.
