Senior Football Championship     Well done to St. Brendan’s on their quarter final win over Legion on Saturday evening last.

A great display by the whole panel, with the three Barry brothers and Diarmuid O’Connor from Na Gaeil all playing well. They now play East Kerry in the semi-final on Sunday next October 27th in Fitzgerald Stadium at 1.30pm. Extra time will be played if necessary.

Na Gaeil Ladies    We played Southern Gaels in the Mary Jo A Final on Sunday morning in Strand Road. We started with two early points playing into the wind from Sarah Cunningham after great work from Niamh Plunkett and Clodagh McHugh.

This was quickly followed by a goal after a great run from Nora O’Connell  after Mary won a kick out and she blasted past the keeper into the back of the net. Nora scored another point from distance after a turnover from Meabh Barry. Southern Gaels replied with two frees from Rachel Dwyer. Gaels started to get themselves back into the game with three well worked points from Rachel Dwyer.

An early ball into the forwards found Shannon O’Donnell in space after a slip from a Na Gaeil defender and Shannon found the bottom corner of the net. From a kick out from Ciara, Eilis won the ball and played Jadyn for a point before Nora O’Connell scored another two points to finish our scoring for the 1st half. Southern Gaels scored the last point of the 1st half to leave it 1-06 apiece. It was a tight first half with both sides giving very little away.

Na Gaeil came out in the 2nd half with the grit between their teeth, playing into the wind. An early free from Meagan Sheehy put them a point up, quickly followed by a goal from Sarah Cunningham after Niamh and Meagan worked to play her in.

With Na Gaeil defence of Sarah Quigley, Muireann Moriarty, Sarah Barrett, Kate Anne O’ Connor, Emma O’Keeffe and Eilis O’Connor all winnimg their positions, Southern Gaels struggled to get past us.

They did get a penalty but Clodagh McHugh stood big in the goals as the penalty hit the post. Freya came into backs and caused trouble with her runs out from the back. Ciara, Hilary and Eimer came into the forwards with fresh legs with Eimer nearly getting in to score. Jadyn Lucey scored another point before Meagan went on a mazy run, taking on four Gaels’ defenders and finding the top corner of the net.

Southern Gaels kept working hard to get forward but struggled against Na Gaeil’s midfield sisters Nora and Mary O Connell. On another turnover won by Carla Hanafin, we won a free from which Meagan Sheehy found the back of the net. Na Gaeil’s last point came after a great run from Eilis who was played in by Ciara.  Southern Gaels scored two frees near the end of the game. Final whistle was blown and the game finished on a scoreline of 4-09 to 1-08. The trophy was presented to the Na Gaeil Captain Meabh Barry by the County Board Representative Nora Feely.
