Phase 1 Restrictions Lifted    It’s great that the Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was in a position to announce on Friday that Phase 1 of the lifting of the Covid-19 restrictions are to go ahead from Monday May 18th. He also announced that the government was advising the wearing of face masks on public transport and in crowded places indoors such as shops and supermarkets. Members of the public are advised to stay at home except for the following reasons:

to go to work, if your place of work is open and you cannot work from home
to shop for items you need
to exercise within 5km of your home
for medical reasons or to care for others
to meet friends or family outside, within 5km of your home, in groups of no more than 4
The government is urging everyone to remember the importance of adhering to basic hygiene measures to stop the spread of COVID-19.

These are to:

wash your hands regularly
maintain a 2 metre distance from others where possible
cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue
stay at home and self-isolate if you are sick
These measures are more important than ever as the restrictions are gradually lifted.

Garden centres and farmers markets are allowed to re-open as well as opticians, motor & bicycle repair shops and phone repair shops. Outdoor construction workers can return to work as well as gardeners and those working on allotments.

The 42    It was great to read an interview given by Na Gaeil star Stefan Okunbor in The 42 website last week.

Stefan ruptured his Achilles tendon in January while training with Geelong just as the new AFL season beckoned. He was on the road to rehab on the weekend that Na Gaeil were enjoying their greatest football adventure ever, lighting up Croke Park and amassing the huge total of 3-20 against Wexford side Rathgarogue/Cushinstown to lift the All Ireland Junior crown in style.

Na Gaeil captain Eoin Doody, after lifting the cup aloft in the Hogan Stand, wished Stefan well in his recovery and let him know that we were all thinking of him.

Everybody in the club is delighted that Stefan is progressing so well in rehab. We send him our best wishes and hopefully he will come back fitter and stronger.  We look forward to seeing him play a starring role for Geelong Cats in the coming season.

Na Gaeil Volunteers     Na Gaeil GAA Club volunteers continue to assist those cocooned in our community with their shopping requirements and also collecting medical supplies for them from their local pharmacies.

We thank them for their great work. We are getting very positive feedback from the local community and everybody cocooned at home are very appreciative of the great work that you are doing. Juveniles    We hope that all our juvenile players are doing well and not finding the restrictions too taxing. The latest news coming through from GAA President John Horan informs us that groups of four players will not be allowed to gather in our pitches to train as previously stated on the government road map of re-opening phases. So for the moment we will have to continue training and practicing our skills in the back garden with members of our family.

Sympathy    We offer our sincere sympathy to Kerry O’Shea and all the O’Shea family on the recent death of his mother Pauline of Clahane Ballyard. May she rest in peace. We also offer our condolences to Kevin Cotter of the Brogue Inn and all the Cotter family on the death of his father Michael J. from Knocknagoshel. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Club Activities Suspended    As you know all club activities are suspended until further notice. The pitch and the gym are closed until further guidelines are released by the government and the GAA.

Clubhouse    The clubhouse will be closed for the foreseeable future. This means that our Monday night bingo, Tuesday night lotto and Wednesday night card playing are suspended indefinitely as well as all other activities that normally took place there on a weekly basis.

Clothes Collection    There is now a Clothes Collection Bin situated in Na Gaeil car park for use by all members of the public.
