Seniors    Na Gaeil entertained Currow in their round two Intermediate Championship group game in a damp and drizzly Killeen on Saturday evening.

Na Gaeil stamped their authority on this game from the very start and opened the scoring in the first minute with a good point from wing forward Eoin O’Neill. Currow responded with a point from left half back Timmie O’Leary on four minutes.

This was as good as it got for a Currow side depleted with injuries. Currow’s no. 13 Seán McCarthy was black carded on 13 minutes for a foul on Diarmuid O’Connor, which further added to their woes.

Diarmuid O’Connor pointed for the home side followed by two points from Darragh Carmody. Midfielders Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor chipped in with a point each before Jamie Lowham blasted to the ball to the Currow net on the quarter hour mark after Dan Goggin’s initial shot had been saved by the keeper.

Na Gaeil were on top in all sectors at this stage. Jack Barry pointed again for the Killeen side before Darragh Carmody pointed two frees to leave the score at the interval: Na Gaeil 1-09; Currow: 0-01.

Despite the efforts of Seamus Scanlon at midfield for Currow Na Gaeil dominated the 2nd half again with James O’Connor opening the scoring after a minute of play.

It was all one way traffic with points coming thick and fast through Jamie Lowham, Diarmaid O’Connor, Eoin Doody, Fergal Barry and a Darragh Carmody free. Seamus Brosnan and Daniel o’Shea tried hard for Currow but could not breach a water tight Na Gaeil defence.

Darragh Reen was introduced for Na Gaeil and found the back of the Currow net after he had been put through by Jack Barry.

Dara Devine also introduced fired over for the home side on 23 minutes. The impressive Darragh Reen had two further points for Na Gaeil before Daniel O’Shea opened Currow’s 2nd half account with a pointed free.

Na Gaeil’s no. 11 Dan Goggin scored the final point of the half to give the Killeen side a comprehensive victory. Final score: Na Gaeil: 2-20; Currow: 0-02.

Co. Minor Football Championship    The County Minor Football Championship which is now an U17 competition kicks off on Monday August 3rd with our divisional side St. Brendan’s playing St. Kieran’s in Na Gaeil at 6pm.

U16    On a windy evening for football, an excellent match was served up by Na Gaeil and John Mitchels, both of whom had won their opening matches in the County League. Na Gaeil sped into an early lead with an excellently taken goal from Kian Sheehan and points from Killian Murphy, John Kearney and Sean O’Connor. John Mitchels scored 3 points to leave the halftime score 1-5 to 0-03. The second half featured some fantastic point kicking by Sean O’Connell who finished with a personal tally of 7. There were also points from Sean O’Connor, Nathan Rogers and a great goal from sub Sean Barrett which ensured a great victory for Na Gaeil. Final score: Na Gaeil: 2-14; John Mitchels: 1-08.

U14    The U14 squad trained on Sunday morning. Their next competitive game will be on this Wednesday August 5th when they take on Churchill at home in Killeen. Churchill also won their last game so it should be a close encounter. We wish them the best of luck.

U12    Two of Na Gaeil’s U12 teams made the trip to Gallarus last week to play An Gaeltacht and played very well winning both games. The third team played Scartaglin in Killeen and it was a hard fought game but with some great effort and no little skill the team had a good win. These matches are really bringing on the lads with everybody getting lots of playing time.

U10    Our U10 boys hosted Austin Stacks on Sunday Morning in Na Gaeil. With close to thirty players Na Gaeil fielded three teams and with all the players getting plenty of game time they showed some great skill and determination. We thank Austin Stacks for visiting and hope to pay them a return visit in the near future.

Senior Ladies County Championship.   Na Gaeil Senior Ladies take on Rathmore in Round 1 the Senior County Championship in Killeen on Monday August 3rd at 7.30pm.

Na Gaeil Minor Ladies    Na Gaeil Minor Ladies had their first match of the season away to Legion last Friday evening.  This was going to be an interesting experience as a lot of the girls had not played together before. We had the older girls who have come up together through the ranks and they were joined by some of the U16’s.  We also have three girls that joined us from Castlegregory as they do not have a minor team this year.

Both teams were a little cautious in the opening quarter and the shooting was a little off following the long break from football.  Mary and Freya were in midfield and were having a good tussle with their Legion counterparts.

The deadlock was broken when Eimear Ní Shúilleabháin collected the ball on the 45 and weaved her way towards goal with her shot dipping under the bar for a goal.

Play was even for next 10 minutes until a ball found Caoilin on the edge of the box and she slotted the ball to the back of the net.  Three minutes later Muire picked off a nice point. Legion made a strong run forward 8 minutes before the break and pulled a goal back to make the score 2-1 to 1-0 at halftime. The second half was a different story though.

The Na Gaeil were getting more comfortable playing together as a team and began to pull away and scored 1 – 3 without reply in the opening 15 minutes with a goal from Ciara Rath and 2 points from Muire and a pointed free from Caoilin.

Legion picked off two pointed frees before Eimear O’Donoghue scored a goal and a point. Cara Gannon popped over a point and Mary scored 2 points.  Legion only managed one more point while Roisin and Siena scored a point each for the visiting side.  Final score: Na Gaeil: 4 – 10; Legion: 1 – 3.  Our next game is against Fossa next Friday.

Na Gaeil: Aine O’Sullivan, Ciara Butler, Caragh O’Neill, Aisling Casey, Annie O’Neill,  Dearbla Quirke, Sarah Barrett, Emma Dewey, Mary O’Connell (C), Freya O’Connor, Eimear O’Donoghue, Cara Gannon, Muire Kingston, Caoilin O’Brien, Ciara Rath, Eimear Ni Shúilleabháin, Elizabeth Slattery, Roisin O’Mahony, Aoife Barrett, Sorcha Casey and Siena Lucey.

Co. Junior Football Leagues The County Junior Football leagues will commence in August. Na Gaeil is in Group D along with Dingle B, Kerins O’Rahillys B and An Gaeltacht. Round 1 will be played on Friday August 14th, Round 2 on September 4th and Round 3 on September 11th.
