Seniors    Na Gaeil made the journey to Killarney on Saturday evening to take on Spa in their final Intermediate Championship group game.

Even though both teams had already qualified for the quarter finals of this competition the game was played in true championship fervor.

Spa rested their Kerry players Dara Moynihan and Liam Kearney. However they raced into an early lead with a well taken goal by their wing back Shane Cronin. Diarmaid Herlihy replied with a point for Na Gaeil at the other end.

Spa had another shot on goal well saved by Na Gaeil keeper Timmy Culloty. They tacked on the next three scores through Gary Vaughan, Evan Cronin and a Stam O’Donoghue free before Dan O’Connor pointed for Na Gaeil in the 12th minute.

This was quickly cancelled out by a point from Spa’s Niall O’Mahoney. Na Gaeil’s Eoin Doody had to leave the field with a leg injury and he was replaced by Fergal Barry. Diarmaid Herlihy pointed for Na Gaeil after calling for a mark just before the water break.

Stam O’Donoghue pointed a free for Spa on the resumption of play followed by a point from their full forward Evan Cronin before wing forward Darragh Reen popped on over his first point for Na Gaeil on 20 minutes. Michael Foley and Shane Cronin had further points for Spa to put them ahead by 7.

Dara Devine for Na Gaeil and Michael McCarthy for Spa traded points before Jack Barry burst through for a goal with 31 minutes gone. Evan Cronin and David Spillane pulled back points for Spa. Diarmuid O’Connor had the final say of the half with a good score for Na Gaeil. Half time score : Na Gaeil: 1-06; Spa: 1-11.

Na Gaeil replaced Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor with Tadhg Óg Lynch and Darragh Carmody for the 2nd half. Spa started brightly with two points from Stam O’Donoghue and one from David Spillane.

Na Gaeil upped the tempo and scored the next six points on the trot with two each coming from the boot of Diarmaid Herlihy and Darragh Reen and one from Ian McCarthy and Tadhg Óg Lynch to leave two between the sides with 12 minutes of the half gone. Niall O’Mahoney Evan Cronin and Gary Vaughan pushed it out to five before Diarmaid Herlihy intercepted a short kick out and weaved his way through the Spa defence for a well taken goal.

This score brought it back to a two point game again with 5 minutes left to play. Na Gaeil keeper Timmy Culloty made a point blank save from midfielder Ciaran Spillane to deny Spa a certain goal in the 32nd minute. Evan Cronin popped over the final point of the game to leave the home side three to the good at full time on a score line of: Na Gaeil; 2-12; Spa: 1-18.

Co. Junior Football Leagues The County Junior Football leagues are commencing this weekend. Na Gaeil take on An Ghaeltacht in Killeen on this coming Friday, August 14th at 7pm.

Minor Co. Championship   St. Brendan’s had a good win over St. Kieran’s last Monday evening with all the Na Gaeil players doing well. They will play Mid-Kerry in the quarter final this Monday evening August 10th in Blennerville at 6.30pm. We wish them the best of luck.

Minor Football League    Na Gaeil will play Austin Stacks away in Round 2 of the County Minor Football League on this Saturday August 15th at 4pm.

U14    Na Gaeil U14 team played Churchill in round 2 of the league. Conditions on the night were excellent and both teams served up a very even first half. Churchill however pulled away in the 2ndhalf to win on a score line of: Na Gaeil: 5-04; Churchill: 4-16. Na Gaeil will now play Kerins O’Rahilly’s away on this Wednesday, August 12th. We wish our lads the best of luck.

U10    Na Gaeil hosted Ballymac on Thursday evening last and fielded two teams. Well done to all the boys who all played their hearts out on their home ground.  Then on Sunday this squad travelled to Farranfore to take on Firies. Both groups played some cracking football with Na Gaeil fielding three teams to ensure that everybody got plenty of game time. Thanks to the Firies club for hosting Na Gaeil in their excellent set up.

U8    Na Gaeil U8’s travelled to Firies on Sunday on Sunday where they were welcomed by the home team. The boys were split into three teams to ensure that everybody got plenty of game time. The weather was perfect for football. We thank Firies for hosting us and we look forward to their visit to Na Gaeil in the near future.

Na Gaeil Ladies    Na Gaeil played Rathmore in the Senior Ladies County Championship last Monday evening in Killeen. Megan O’Connor got Na Gaeil off to a good start with the first point of the game which was quickly cancelled out with a point by Rathmore. Scores were shared by both teams before Rathmore scored a goal on 11 minutes to leave the score 1.05 to 0.05 at the water break. Na Gaeil came back with goals from Jadyn Lucey and Megan O’Connor. The half time score was 1.10 to 2.06 to Rathmore after a very close first half encounter. Na Gaeil got off to a bad start for the 2nd half receiving a yellow and leaving them with 14 players. Rathmore took full advantage scoring 5 unanswered points. Na Gaeil started to get back into the game and held good possession but good defending from Rathmore held Na Gaeil. With the experience in the Rathmore defence superbly led by Aisling Desmond, Rathmore finshed the game winning on a scoreline of 1.17 to 2.06.

U16 Ladies   Na Gaeil played Glenflesk at home on Wednesday evening in the U16 County League in near perfect conditions. Siena got us off to the perfect start with a goal and a point before having to retire with an injury. Cara and Aisling were a driving force in midfield to supporting both defence and attack. With some good work by Jessie and Mia, we got a couple of more points through Siun and Caoilinn and another goal before half time. When Glenflesk did trouble us in the 1st half, our full back line of Emma, Gráinne and Grace stood firm along with our half back line of Molly, Elizabeth and Roisín. Sarah and Katie seamlessly came into the side. We were forced into a few changes at half time and Glenflesk made a strong comeback at us scoring 6 points. However we settled back into the game when Alice scored a great point for us and we kicked on from there with more points from Siun and Caoilinn to finish out the game on a scoreline of 2.08 to 0.07

Clubhouse Open The clubhouse is open for food on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings from 6.30pm to 10.30pm. Club members can order a toasted sandwich, chips and salad plus a couple of more options for €9. Last food orders are at 8.45pm. This weekend went very well and there is very positive feedback from club members that availed of the service. Hope to see you there next weekend.

Clubhouse The clubhouse is closed for all outside activities and the gym will also be closed until there is further clarification from GAA Headquarters as to when they can re-open. This means that our Monday night bingo, Tuesday night lotto and Wednesday night card playing are suspended until then as well as all other activities that normally took place there on a weekly basis.

Clothes Collection There is now a Clothes Collection Bin situated in Na Gaeil car park for use by all members of the public.
