Intermediate Championship    Na Gaeil will play An Ghaeltacht in their final group game of the Intermediate Championship on Sunday next September 26th at 2.30pm in Killeen.

As per usual match tickets will be available on the Kerry GAA website from early in the week. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

Seniors    Na Gaeil made the journey to Killorglin on Sunday to play the home side Laune Rangers in the second group game of the County Intermediate Championship.

Conditions were good with a slight breeze blowing diagonally across the pitch. Na Gaeil were very impressive in the first quarter reeling off the first four points without reply from the Mid Kerry side. Devon Burns opened Na Gaeil’s account two minutes in with a long range free.

Ian McCarthy scored in the sixth minute after Devon decided to go short with his next free. Dan Goggin and Darragh Carmody had two more points on the board before Laune Rangers registered their first score in the 10th minute with a point from their no. 14 Dáire Cleary.

This came after a few bad wides from the home side. Diarmuid O’Connor was lording it at midfield and shipped some heavy tackles from the opposition in their efforts to curb his surging runs. Dan Goggin scored his 2nd point 12 minutes in and then former Kerry player Peter Crowley pulled one back for Laune Rangers after a fine run up the right wing.

Na Gaeil led 0-05 to 0-02 at the first water break and deservedly so. There were wides from both sides before Laune Rangers John Tyther lobbed over a free on 23 minutes to narrow the gap to 2. But a minute later the eager beaver Dan Goggin won possession out on the forty.

He spotted Darragh Carmody unmarked on the edge of the square and sent him a precision pass. Darragh turned and sent the ball low and hard to the left hand corner of the Rangers net to stretch their lead to five points. But The Mid Kerry side responded before half time with two pointed frees from John Tyther and Fiachra Clifford. Half time score: Na Gaeil: 1-05; Laune Rangers: 0-05.

Laune Rangers first attack of the 2nd half yielded a point from the boot of their centre forward Fiachra Clifford. But Diarmuid O’Connor cancelled out this score with a well taken point from out on the left wing. Fiachra Clifford pointed another free for the home side on 44 minutes.

Jack Barry entered the fray at this stage and Diarmuid took a breather in at full forward. He won the first high ball in, called for a mark and slotted it between the posts.

There was still a goal separating the sides at the 2nd water break: Na Gaeil: 1-07; Laune Rangers: 0-07.

Enda O’Connor received a rather harsh black card early in the final quarter for a foul on Fiachra Clifford and the same player fired over the resultant free. Laune Rangers really made the extra man count.

Na Gaeil struggled to win their own kick outs and their backs had to defend heroically to stay in the game. Sub Kieran Doona made a telling impact on his introduction firing over two points in quick succession for Laune Ranger to level the game for the first time with three minutes of normal time left to play.

But up at the other end Darragh Carmody won a great ball and was brought down as he headed for goal. He pointed what was a difficult enough free to put Na Gaeil one ahead with time running out. Dan Goggin intercepted the Laune Rangers kick out and nearly put it in the back of the net but the keeper managed to gather it and avert the danger.

Andrew Barry who had a great game all through won the next ball and made an amazing run up the right wing going through wall after wall of Laune Rangers players, to have his fine effort for a point batted out for a 45 by keeper Jason Browne.

Devon Burns stepped up and calmly slotted it over to make it a two point game. With time almost up Laune Rangers drove up the field and scored through John Tyther to narrow the gap to a point once more.

The referee, Gerard Murphy blew the final whistle on the kick out to leave the Killeen side victorious by the narrowest of margins and ensuring them a place in the quarter finals.

Na Gaeil full back line of Eoin Doody, Niall O’Mahony and Damien Bourke coped very well with a potent Laune Rangers full forward line. Outside them Fergal Barry Enda O’Connor and Andrew Barry also defended excellently and carried the ball forward at every opportunity.

Diarmuid O’Connor was once again a powerhouse at midfield. James O’Connor and Dan Goggin worked hard in the half forward line as did Darragh Carmody in the inside line.

Na Gaeil: Devon Burns(0-02), Eoin Doody, Niall O’Mahony, Damien Bourke, Fergal Barry, Enda O’Connor, Andrew Barry, Tomás O’hAiniféin, Diarmuid O’Connor(0-02), Kieran O’Donovan, Dan Goggin(0-02), James O’Connor, Ian McCarthy(0-01), Jamie Lowham Darragh Carmody(1-02). Subs: Jack Barry for Jamie Lowham; Declan Cooney for Ian McCarthy; Eoin O’Neill for Kieran O’Donovan.

U15    Last Wednesday, Sept 15th, we played Ballymac in the Kelliher’s Toyota sponsored Central Region Division 3 final in Blennerville. Ballymac edged the first quarter scoring 1-03 to our 0-03. We enjoyed a purple patch at the start of the second quarter and kicked over 5 unanswered points to leave us ahead by 2 points. However disaster struck when we conceded a penalty and Ballymac converted. We got the next point but Ballymac added a further 1-01 just before halftime to leave us trailing by 3-04 to 0-09 at halftime.

We had the upper hand in the third quarter and cut the deficit to just 2 points, 3-06 to 0-13. Unfortunately an injury to our captain Peter Doyle in the final quarter put paid to our chances and Ballymac ran out winners on a score line of Ballymac: 3-10; Na Gaeil: 0-15.

The management and the players would like to thank Colm O Súilleabháin for organising pizzas in the clubhouse for the boys after the game.
